Wildlife holidays in Borneo
Tell me about Borneo …
The Malaysian Province of Sabah in northern Borneo is a prosperous state with a good infrastructure and excellent national parks system. Kota Kinabalu is Sabah’s affluent capital.
The impressive Mount Kinabalu (4,101 metres) is the highest mountain between the Himalaya and New Guinea. Mount Kinabalu National Park was established in 1964 to protect the massif and its surrounding area.
Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre was set up in 1964 to help once captive or displaced Orang-utans learn to fend for themselves back in the wild.
Our Borneo specialist recommends..
"If you are a primate fan, then the ‘Borneo’s Orang-utans’ tour could be for you. We explore the rainforests of Borneo in search of Orang-utans as well as other birds and mammals. For a birdwatching orientated holiday why not try our ‘Mount Kinabulu & the Rainforests of Borneo’."
What’s special about the wildlife?
Borneo is home to the oldest rainforests on Earth. The Danum Valley contains one of the last remaining tracts of primary lowland diptocarp forest and is renowned as one of the very best natural history sites in South-east Asia.
Sabah boasts over 200 species of mammal, 450 species of bird, over 8,000 plant species and a myriad of different insects!
A host of primates inhabits Borneo’s rainforests, the two best known being Orang-utan and Proboscis Monkey.
Sabah’s birdlife is as spectacular as it is diverse. Special species to see include: Bornean Bristlehead, Storm’s Stork, Philippine Scrubfowl, Rhinoceros Hornbill and Whitehead’s Broadbill, plus Bornean and Black-throated Wren-babbler.
Naturetrek Tours to Borneo
We offer three holidays to Borneo: a 21-day bird watching tour to Sabah’s lowland and montane forests, an 11-day holiday focusing on Orang-utans; a bargain bird watching tour to Sabah.
Can I see Orang-utans?
Our 11-day ‘Borneo’s Orang-utans’ holiday, run in conjunction with the wildlife charity Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), includes a visit to Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. Orang-utans are the principal focus of this holiday, but we will also enjoy many other wildlife highlights.
In addition, we are likely to see Orang-utans on all three of our wildlife holidays to Borneo.
What wildlife might I see?
- We’ll look for a host of bird species including hornbills, wren-babblers, frogmouths, trogons, pittas & broadbills
- Many primates inhabit Sabah, such as Orang-utans, Proboscis Monkeys, gibbons, langurs & leaf monkeys
- Other mammals include elephant, Banteng & flying squirrels

- Our bargain bird watching holiday goes in search of the colourful avifauna of Borneo’s tropical forests & includes an optional extension to Mount Kinabalu National Park
WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SAYING ABOUT OUR Borneo HOLIDAYS
What a tour!!! Thanks so much. Chris Kehoe, the best, fantastic guy, great leader. Osman, brilliant, wonderful person. Accommodation, food, itinerary, ground agents, organisation, flights, birds, mammals, flora, all of the highest quality. It made for the best trip we have ever had the pleasure of participating in with Naturetrek. Chris is the ultimate professional and we look forward to travelling with him again in the future.
This was an excellent trip. Having started off as someone who mainly wanted to see Orang-utans and with little knowledge of the bird life of Borneo. I am now a convert and enthusiastic about spotting birds and other wildlife. I put this down to the skills of our trip leader Chris Kehoe and local guide Hasmit. Chris managed the trip very well and ensured the group got whatever the individuals wanted from the experience. There was never any pressure to do walks of treks that you did not wish to do. It was obvious that Chris is extremely knowledgeable about the bird-life in particular, and very patient with those of us who were new to this type of holiday. The local guide was also very good and a delightful young man. The whole experience has exceeded expectations.
A most interested and enjoyable holiday...excellent leaders in the shape of Chris Kehoe, Hamit & Nadir... Their knowledge and enthusiasm was without bounds, to the extent that I became caught up init and am now a convert to bird-watching as well as mammal spotting. Without a doubt, I would consider another Naturetrek holiday.
