Wildlife holidays in Menorca

Tell me about Menorca …

Menorca is the most easterly and greenest of the Balearic Islands. It is rugged, rocky and remains largely uncultivated.

The southern coast is a series of low cliffs broken by sandy coves, usually backed with woodland and damp gorges. The northern coast is more rugged with spectacular headlands.

Our Menorca specialist recommends...

Our ‘Menorca’ holiday is a dual focus trip, searching for both its birds and its flowers. There are some rare orchid species, a sedentary population of Egyptian Vultures and a wealth of wetland birds, together with beautiful secluded coves, white sand and crystal clear seas’

What’s special about the wildlife?

Plant life: in spring, Menorca boasts intricate displays of wild flowers. The northern coast has a specialised coastal flora which includes many of the local endemic plants.

The island has several wetland areas which are of particular importance for birds.

Naturetrek Tour to Menorca

We offer an 8-day holiday on this beautiful Mediterranean island in search of both birds and flowers.

What wildlife might I see?

  • We’ll look for Cistus bushes & purple gladioli, orchids & Asphodels, plus vetches, hawkweeds, bugloss, Alyssum & more
  • We should find some Balearic specialities such as several sea-lavenders, Hippocrepis balearica & Cyclamen balearicum, & Menorcan endemics including Centaurea balearica
  • Europe’s only sedentary population of Egyptian Vulture lives on Menorca & other birds of prey we may see include Eleonora’s Falcon
  • Purple, Night & Squacco Herons are among the wetland species we’ll search for, while Woodchat Shrikes, warblers & Wrynecks add to the variety in woodland & scrub areas

Anything else?

For birders, the chance of seeing something unexpected is one of the highlights of a visit to Menorca; Moustached Warblers can be seen at breeding sites.

Our base is a beautifully restored 18th century Menorcan farmhouse set in 10 hectares of tranquil countryside!

Prehistoric human sites add to the island’s cultural interest.

The itinerary was very good, and the leader well informed and thoughtful.

Our hotel was excellent and the food some of the best we have had. The welcome and service were great. Our two leaders really know their stuff, but were relaxed and not too serious which was what we wanted. Altogether a nice, relaxing and interesting holiday.

I found the overall balance of the trip very satisfactory, coving many aspects of natural history.
