Tour Leader: Stuart Elsom
Stuart Elsom is a freelance tour leader, ecologist and wildlife photographer whose love of natural history started in his childhood. His continuing passion for wildlife conservation has seen him serve on several environmental and conservation forums and he is a former chairman of his local bird club. Stuart's lifelong interest in birds and insects has taken him to many countries, on six continents, often on tours with his wife Jill who is also an experienced traveller, birder and naturalist. As a professional ecologist Stuart undertakes a wide range of surveys on protected habitats and species both onshore and offshore in the UK and overseas, and is a member of The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. He is an active volunteer with his local wildlife trust Woodland Ecology Group, the RSPB and Bedfordshire Bird Club and takes a particular interest in local conservation initiatives and projects.
While birds are Stuart's main focus he has always maintained an interest in insects, especially butterflies and moths, and is a member of the Amateur Entomologists' Society. Stuart has photographed the vast majority of British butterflies and regularly attends moth-trapping sessions with the local moth recorder, and, when time permits, runs his own trap in his garden. Stuart is a keen wildlife photographer and a member of the Royal Photographic Society Nature Group, through which he was awarded his Licentiate Distinction (LRPS).
