Wolf-watching in Spain – an update
Wolf-watching in Spain
Naturetrek was the very first wildlife tour operator to offer a holiday to look for and watch Iberian Wolves in Spain. Following a long sequence of reconnaissance visits to the area by staff and tour leaders some 15 or more years ago, we ran our first tour to the rolling hills of the Sierra de la Culebra in 2006. The tour proved an instant hit, with hundreds of clients joining us in the years that followed, most enjoying excellent Wolf sightings (a success rate, indeed, in excess of 90%) and the warm hospitality of a village guesthouse, as well as a wealth of raptors, Red and Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Otters and much other wildlife. In a region that still depends heavily on forestry, farming and hunting, we also drew our fair share of attention from the Spanish press during our years of operating there. Indeed it took some effort to explain to local residents and authorities that our British groups were present to observe and enjoy the region’s wildlife rather than to shoot it! Our aim was to leave footprints only behind us in the countryside ... and our tourist euros in the village guesthouse and local stores and bars.
Gradually though, we became disillusioned by incessant interrogations from forest guards, reduced Wolf sightings brought about by increased hunting, and ever more Wolf-watching groups from all corners of Europe disturbing the peace and solitude we once enjoyed in the region. So, last year we abandoned our tours to the area and moved our Wolf-watching operation in Spain to a little-known spot in the Palentian Mountains 150 miles to the north-east. Here we have benefited from a team of superb local guides whose knowledge of their wild and empty tract of mountains, and its wildlife, is unrivalled. With their help, we have enjoyed excellent sightings of a healthy population of Iberian Wolves, as well as the occasional Cantabrian Brown Bear, Wildcat, Otter, Wild Boar and Pine Marten, plus a superb supporting cast of birds, some fine scenery and fantastic hospitality.
