Madagascar – Tailormade for Wildlife Photography!

Baobab Trees

Baobab Trees

Madagascar is one of our most popular destinations for keen photographers. The wildlife is varied, plentiful and, for the most part, unique to this special island. Clients often rave about the close-up encounters they have experienced and the wonderful images they can enjoy with their friends and family on returning home!

Travelling mostly overland, this private tailormade holiday visits some of the very best of Madagascar’s rainforests, dry forests and its very special spiny desert. This itinerary is perfect for the first time visitor — it takes you to a fantastic cross-section of habitats and promises a comprehensive introduction to Madagascar’s rich and unique natural history. Madagascar has five families of endemic birds, and you can hope for close views of such beautiful birds as the Long-tailed Ground-roller, Crested Coua and Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher. Bright chameleons and geckos, huge moths and beautiful butterflies are plentiful, and troops of lemurs can be extremely confiding, affording photographers with stunning close-ups of these enigmatic creatures. The beautiful Diademed Sifaka, characterful Ring-tailed Lemurs, and the wonderful Indri, are just a few of the many species you can hope to encounter during your daily visits to the forest reserves.

Following a necessary stop at Antsirabe, your holiday begins in Ranomafana National Park’s wonderful rainforests, which protect several rare lemurs including Golden Bamboo Lemur, Greater Bamboo Lemur and Milne-Edward’s Sifaka, as well as some special birds such as Pitta-like Ground-roller, Velvet Asity and Red-fronted Coua. Your guide will be keen to point out the tiny Giraffe-necked Weevils, Satanic Leaf-tailed Geckos, and many other fascinating oddities throughout your time here! Moving on to Isalo National Park, you will stop at the very special Anja community reserve to enjoy the antics of the confiding troops of Ring-tailed Lemurs that live here. Reaching the coast, over 90% of all the plants are endemic within the spiny desert here, and dawn visits to explore it are to be treasured. Huge baobab trees and spiny Didieracae ‘Octopus’ trees dominate, and you can search for Sub-desert Mesites whose defence mechanism is to ‘freeze’ when spotted. Perfect for photographers … if only all birds would do that! After returning to the east coast, you finish your tour with a stay at Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, where one can enjoy the stunning Diademed Sifakas, Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, and experience the eerie howls of the Indri that inhabit these forests.

If you have the time, why not add a few extra nights to the end of your trip in order to relax and unwind at the idyllic private resort of Anjajavy, or, if you are visiting in August or September, to travel north to the small island of Ile Sainte Marie, from which you can watch the Humpback Whales on their migration south.
