Ecuador tailormade: save £300 per person!
Giant River Otter
We are delighted to be offering a saving of £300 per person on a special private tailormade wildlife holiday to Ecuador in 2015, focusing on birds and mammals - reducing the cost from £4,695 to £4,395 per person!
The holiday in brief
This special private itinerary to Ecuador has been designed to combine the very best of the wildlife of both the western and eastern Andean slopes, as well as the high-altitude specialities to be found on the Papallacta pass and a 4-night finale in a world-class lodge in the lowland rainforest of the Amazon! All this without having to endure any long and arduous road journeys!
The lush cloudforests of Mindo, on the western Andean slope, will provide your first extensive taste of Ecuadorian birding. Here, large mixed feeding flocks of various flycatchers and brilliantly coloured tanagers are readily viewed, whilst other sought-after species include Plate-billed Mountain-toucan and Toucan Barbet. More furtive avian varieties include Giant, Moustached and Yellow-breasted Antpittas, whilst the opportunity to witness a raucous Cock-of-the-rock lekking display is not to be missed!
Papallacta lies at the heart of a dynamic area straddling the lush Amazon basin to the east, and the barren slopes of the high Andes to the north and south. Notable species here include Sword-billed Hummingbird and the beautiful Ecuadorian Hillstar, together with various brightly adorned Mountain-tanagers, whilst Andean Condor and the striking Black-faced Ibis can be found on the slopes above Papallacta. For mammal enthusiasts, Spectacled Bear is a distinct possibility here as well! Your comfortable lodge in Papallacta harnesses piping hot thermal springs and offers the perfect antidote to sore muscles after a long day in the field!
Our third destination, San Isidro, lies on the eastern Andean slope and is considered to be one of the best birding locations in the whole of South America. Once again tanagers, hummingbirds and flycatchers are extremely well represented, although the boundary of the Andes has ensured that many differ from those species found in Mindo's forests. The likes of Black-billed Mountain-toucan, Black-chested Fruiteater, Highland Motmot, White-capped Tanager and both White-bellied and Chestnut-crowned Antpittas are amongst just some of the specialities here.
Napo Wildlife Centre
This holiday finishes in the tropical lowland rainforests of eastern Ecuador, in the world-class Napo Wildlife Centre – a rainforest lodge set beside a tranquil oxbow lake. One of the many birding highlights (over 550 species have been recorded here!) is an early morning visit to a parrot clay-lick where up to 10 or more parrot species may be seen. The area also holds such rare and majestic raptors as Harpy and Crested Eagles, whilst a resident family of Giant River Otters is likely to tempt even the most dedicated birder away from the dappled forest. There are also various primates in the area such as Monk Saki, Red Howler and Black Spider Monkeys, plus the Golden-mantled Tamarin, a regional endemic. Suffice to say, Napo is a worthy final location for this enchanting birding and wildlife journey through Ecuador’s finest wildlife habitats!
