Day 1 Depart London

Day 2/3 Pench Tiger Reserve

Day 4/7 Kanha Tiger Reserve

Day 8 Kanha, then drive to Nagpur airport

Day 9 Depart Nagpur

Day 10 Arrive London

This is, quite simply, the most convenient Tiger tour yet! For, by taking advantage of the international flights to Nagpur, the capital of Madhya Pradesh (heartland of the Tiger), we offer the wildlife enthusiast the ultimate luxury — a holiday to India that avoids large cities! Indeed, on this tour more than on any other, we maximise the time spent in India’s wonderful national parks and Tiger reserves, and minimise the time spent travelling — particularly the time spent negotiating India’s ‘urban jungles’.

We begin our tour in India with an afternoon arrival into Nagpur airport after a comfortable flight via Mumbai on one of the world’s best international airlines. From here we drive straight to Pench National Park, a journey of just over two hours to the north of the city. Pench rose to prominence following its designation as Project Tiger’s 19th Tiger Reserve in 1992 and today it protects 758 square kilometres of prime Tiger habitat. It is situated amongst the southern reaches of the Satpura Hills, which lie in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts, the region which inspired Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Jungle Book’. The park spans the border of the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra which is marked by the Pench River as it meanders from north to south through the reserve.

During the dry season the river ceases to flow, forming pools which provide the primary watering holes for Tigers and all other wildlife. On the southern boundary of the park the Pench River has been dammed to generate hydro-electricity, and around the banks of this dam many waterbirds and mammals may be found, amongst them Asiatic Jackal and Nilgai. The terrain is rugged and the region’s hills are cloaked in both southern moist deciduous forest and extensive dry, deciduous forest, dominated by Teak. Gaur, Wild Boar and Common Langurs are common here, as are Sambar, Spotted and Barking Deer. With luck we might also see Dhole, or even a Leopard which are generally seen in the peripheral areas of the park where they are able more easily to avoid Tigers.

Traversing the scenic Vindhya Hills we move next to Kanha National Park where we have yet more opportunities to watch Tigers during daily excursions. Kanha Tiger Reserve encompasses 1,945 square kilometres and is one of the largest reserves in India. It occupies a beautiful location on a plateau in the Maikal range of hills, and comprises a crescent of forested hills that embraces broad undulating grasslands dotted with clumps of bamboo and Sal forest; small pools, and a perennial lake, provide essential drinking holes for the animals. The reserve is famous for its Swamp Deer — for whose protection Kanha National Park was first established in 1955, but since the launch of ‘Project Tiger’s in the early 1970s, Kanha has been one of the Project’s key Tiger Reserves and, because its wide meadows are so suited to successful Tiger viewing, it is one of the best places in the world in which to search for this majestic big cat. Besides Tigers, we can also hope to observe plenty of Sambar, Spotted and Swamp Deer. We should also see Gaur, Wild Boar, Common Langur, Asiatic Jackal and, with luck, Leopard and Dhole. The base from which we will undertake twice-daily game drives into the reserve will be the splendid Kanha Jungle Lodge, close to the Mukki Gate, the quieter of the park entrances. Here we will conclude our ‘Tiger holiday’ with a 4-night stay — ample time in which to see a wealth of wildlife in India’s finest Tiger Reserve.

For the aficionado, however, we offer an opportunity to extend this holiday with a pre-tour visit to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, situated in the Chandrapur District of Maharashtra just a 3-hour drive from Nagpur. The reserve, spanning over 625 square kilometres, incorporates both Tadoba National Park (which became Maharashtra’s first national park in 1955) and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary, and became one of India’s 28 Project Tiger Reserves as recently as 1993. Its hills support a dense tropical dry deciduous forest, largely made up of Teak and bamboo, carved by the Andhari River. As many as 40 Tigers are reputed to survive here, plus a great many other mammals such as Leopard, Sloth Bear, Gaur, Wild Dog, Jungle Cat and Chousingha (the Four-horned Antelope), not to mention a rich birdlife. We stay in a simple but pleasing 12-roomed lodge on the edge of the park. We also offer a post-tour extension to Satpura Tiger Reserve. This is not only the most scenic and peaceful of all central India's Tiger Reserves, it is also, perhaps, the best for Sloth Bear, Leopard, Asian Wild Dog and Indian Giant Squirrel. We thoroughly recommend a visit!

A superb holiday; food, accommodation, experience and of course the wildlife sightings were fantastic. Great Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog and Slot Bear sightings and fantastic birds. The parks were a delight to be in. Transfer from and to each venue was smooth and hassle free. Food was excellent, particularly Tadoba and Kanha. Accommodation was great, particularly Kanha (a beautiful place), and the service was great. Nick's attention to detail and general support was first class and his knowledge was outstanding, not just the wildlife, but his knowledge of India was immense. Park guides were generally great, and Vinod in Kanha was outstanding. His knowledge, communication skills and personality were brilliant. He enhanced every drive we had with him. Being in the Indian jungle and listening and reacting to the sounds and calls was a fantastic experience. We were particularly lucky to have the same interests and sense of humour in the group that were in our jeep so very pleased we were able to stay together for the whole tour. Sudeep on the final day also arranged for us to visit 3 temples in Tadoba which was excellent and made a perfect end to the trip. He was very attentive and knowledgeable, and went out of this way to accommodate us. Overall first class experience.

All the accommodation was good, but the lodge at Kanha was outstanding. It wasn't that it was particularly luxurious, though it was comfortable enough, but it was more the overall feel of the place that impressed. Well run, really friendly, and a wonderful place to relax between jeep rides.

We were very impressed by both tour guides (Indrajit and Yusuf). They were efficient, knowledgeable, attentive, kind and good humoured - nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. The accommodation at all four lodges was of the highest quality and the service and food was superb.

We had a brilliant time – Tadoba was exceptional, you perhaps under sell the lodge – we were very impressed by its practicality, space, comfort, food and the attitude of the staff. Kanha Lodge was stunning in every way.

We felt that the holiday – our first with Naturetrek – was excellent value for money, and we would not hesitate to travel with Naturetrek again. We were made to feel very welcome in all three of the lodges that we stayed at (especially Kanha which we thought was delightful). We must also pay tribute to our guides Indrajit and Yusuf, whose knowledge and enthusiasm were inspirational.

Harish, our tour leader was excellent in all respects. The Tadoba and Satpura extensions were also excellent. We were in particular impressed with how the staff looked after guests at both these locations as well as accommodation and food.

Mix of 3 reserves was great, the guides, Himanshu and Dilip, worked very hard and did a great job, chance to look for other wildlife, chance to look for other wildlife other than Tigers was appreciated and of course the Tiger viewings, especially from elephant back, were brilliant.

The leader made everything run without a hitch. Excellent touch to sort out all the tips on a kitty basis. I left a jacket in one of the remote lodges, and it was returned to me safe and sound on our return to Nagpur. Impossible to find a fault with any aspect of the trip. In particular our wives' private extension to Delhi and Agra was a huge success.

The holiday was great fun and we were lucky in having wonderful views of tigers and wild dogs (dhole). The Jungle Lodge in Kanha got everyone's vote as their favourite place. Our main tour guides, Himanshu and Yusuf, were great and very knowledgeable, as were all the lodge guides that came with us in Kanha.

Ron and I and one other person chose to do this extension and I know that we were all thrilled with what Tadoba offered. The transfers from Nagpur to Tadoba were handled well by the ground agents. At Tadoba we stayed in the Svasara Jungle Lodge which provided excellent accommodation and the facilities and food were fantastic. The transfers from Nagpur to Tadoba were handled well by the ground agents. Our group had the services of one of the Lodge's Naturalists, Chirag Roy, who we found personable and knowledgeable. Fitting with the Naturetrek comments on Tadoba, we found it excellent and relatively untravelled by other safari goers. As well as low visitor numbers, it delivered excellent Tiger sightings for our small group. Our first sighting started with us finding a female tiger lying on the road. She then proceeded to walk towards the jeeps, scent marking on the side of the road several times and rubbing her head on a tree. At this point, the jeeps were stopped and the female (P2) walked past the jeeps about 5 foot away - needless to say we all stayed very quiet and completely still while the image of that close encounter was imprinted on our brains. The female then proceeded to walk down the road away from us, and when eventually another vehicle arrived, she decided to sit down on the road facing us. All up we had brilliant views of P2 for over 10 minutes and only 3 vehicles were present for the majority of this time. On a separate occasion, our vehicle followed a large male tiger down the road for around 4 minutes until he moved off the road to go to a stream for a drink which we were able to watch for a couple of minutes. Our guide was able to take our vehicle around to another viewing point where he thought we would be able to see the male and after a short wait we were able to watch him settle down for a rest in the shade. As well as these two sightings we were also able to get views of 2 additional separate tigers lying down in the forest. While only a very small amount of the actual tiger was visible the sightins proved to be enticing and exciting. As well as these brilliant tiger sightings we also managed to get a reasonable view of a mother Sloth bear and her cub and excellent views of a small Dhole pack. These were in addition to the many repeated sightings of the various deer, Gaur, Mongoose and many, many birds. Tadoba certainly lived up to its reputation and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

I would like to thank Naturetrek and particularly Rajan Jolly for a particularly well organised trip. All the transport was organised without unnecessary delays, the accommodation and food was excellent with both the Tiger Corridor and Kanha Jungle Lodge giving great detail to comfort. The park entrances/permits, transport and guides into both Pench and Kanha Tiger Reservers were excellent in organisation and quality, added to which the experience within the reserves was excellent and the exhilaration of seeing my first Tiger will live long in my memory. I would like to express my particular thanks to Harish Sharma who made the holiday particularly pleasant, his constant efforts to ensure everything was in order, his pleasant demeanour and his particular knowledge of the birds, bird call, mammals and mammal calls made for a most memorable trip. Praise must also go to Durgesh Singh who again tirelessly worked to ensure the holiday went smoothly.

Fabulous trip. I couldn't really have asked for more. Both parks had such diversity and beauty, plus we got to see 6 tigers (4 being cubs). The food was excellent in all 3 hotels and last, but by no means least, our naturalist guide, Indrajit, was brilliant. There wasn't a bird, butterfly, plant or mammal that he didn't know and he was a very personable companion on the trip. I would go again tomorrow if I could!

We had a fabulous time and saw everything we hoped to see, and more. But even if we hadn't, the holiday was enhanced considerably by Indrajit, an extremely likeable man who knew the answer to everything we asked him, kept us all enthralled and had a great sense of humour. As novice adventurers, he 'held our hands' every step of the way too, and was always able to put us at ease. Also, we knew very little about birds beforehand but, thanks to Indrajit, now have a keen interest and considerably more knowledge about India's birdlife.

We were very privileged on the extension to see the two tigers hunting a Sambar stag (an event that made the TV, front page of both the state newspaper and The Times of India, and internet)! I would like to congratulate Naturetrek on an extremely well organised and interesting trip to Pench and Kanha National Parks. The team guides, Sara and Dilip, looked after us well and did everything to make the trip interesting and such a success. The guides within the national parks also deserve a special mention as they did all they could to enable us to see as much of India’s animal and bird life as possible. Eight tigers, 13 sloth bears, 2 packs of wild dogs, 4 sorts of deer, and fabulous birds. What more could we ask! But I have to say what really made it was meeting Nick. We felt really privileged.
