Armenia in Spring

Tour Code: ARM01

A 9-day Bargain Birdwatching tour to Armenia.

9 days from £1795(inc flights) Land Only Price: £1595 SRS: £195

Armenia is home to over two-thirds of Europe’s regularly occurring bird species, including many that are rare or difficult to find elsewhere. We begin our holiday at Mount Aragats, where we’ll look for such species as Caucasian Black Grouse, White-throated Robin, Horned Lark and the distinctive local race of Bluethroat. Next we head to the Armash Fish Ponds, Armenia’s premier wetland region, which teems with birds such as Pygmy Cormorant, White-winged Black Tern and Glossy Ibis. Next we will be based for two nights at Yeghegnadzor, where we’ll look for montane species such as Red-fronted Serin and Caspian Snowcock. We’ll then spend two nights at Dilijan exploring Lake Sevan en route; Sevan is the country’s largest lake and a nesting site for the rare Armenian Gull. Flycatchers, redstarts and warblers should provide a fitting finale to our holiday.

  • Radde’s Accentor, Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush & White-winged Snowfinch, Mt Aragats
  • Lammergeier & Levant Sparrowhawk plus several eagle species
  • Marbled, White-headed & Ferruginous Ducks among a host of other wetland birds
  • Moustached, Great Reed, Paddyfield, Menetries’ & Upcher’s Warblers
  • Small colony of Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters near Armash Fish Ponds
  • Look for Crimson-winged Finch, Wallcreeper, Ortolan Bunting & Rose-coloured Starling
  • Semi-collared & Red-breasted Flycatchers, Roller & Lesser Grey Shrike
  • Led by expert ornithologist guide

I thought the trip was good value for money. The driver we had was excellent and I felt very safe with his driving. We covered a variety of habitats and we saw most of the species which we hoped to see. Most of them very well indeed. Siranush was a quiet but charming guide who knows her natural history well. All in all a very good trip.

The party size was conducive for good birding with a wide range of expertise and experience in the field. The range of habitats were varied and enough time was spent at each location to enable the group to fully appreciate the flora and fauna. Excellent drivers, especially those that transported us into the mountains using trusty 4x4 Ladas!

This is a comprehensive tour of key sites in this beautiful, mountainous and slightly mysterious country. The quality and range of birds was excellent with the bonus of a distant Brown Bear sitting with cub at one mountainous site for our group. Hasmik was a very knowledgeable and affable guide and all drivers used experienced. Accommodation was varied and of a good standard, food both interesting and varied and the people welcoming. Well organised and a recommended destination that will be fondly remembered.
