Herds of Elephant are a common sight along with Giraffe, Buffalo, Red Lechwe and Impala. About the region

This tour is based around the world famous Okavango Delta.

The Khwai Community Area is a huge expanse of protected wetlands, Leadwood forests and open plains lying adjacent to, but just outside, the western limits of the Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai area has some of the best game viewing in the Okavango region.

Moremi Wildlife Reserve on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta was set aside as a reserve by the baTwana tribe in 1963 and is now considered to be one of Africa's finest wildlife sanctuaries. The Xakanaxa region lies on the northern edge of the Moremi Game Reserve.

The tour ‘in a nutshell’

A 10-day mammal watching holiday to the spectacular inland delta of the Okavango, focusing on the abundant wildlife within the Moremi Game Reserve.

What mammals might I see?

Three nights in the Khwai region provide excellent opportunities to look for game such as huge bull Elephants as well as breeding herds of Elephants. Lion, Leopard and Spotted Hyena are common predators, with Wild Dog and Cheetah also possible but less common.

Other mammals we may see include African Buffalo, Red Lechwe, Tsessebe, Blue Wildebeest, Burchell's Zebra, Waterbuck, Southern Giraffe, Greater Kudu, Impala and perhaps even Roan or Sable Antelopes. The Khwai River also holds an unusually high density of Hippos.

In Moremi Game Reserve, African Elephants are common, along with Impala, Southern Giraffe and Steenbok. These are preyed upon by Leopard, Lion and Cheetah, and both Khwai and Xakanaxa are included within the home ranges of two different packs of Wild Dogs. Indeed, the Moremi Game Reserve – and Okavango Delta as a whole – is home to one of Africa's highest densities of Wild Dogs. Serval and Wild Cat are also possible.

Anything else?

The abundant bird life in the Okavango includes waterbirds, birds of prey and Southern Ground Hornbills. The liquid song of the colourful Heuglin's Robin often dominates the morning's bird song.

Serval and African Wild Cat are possible.

Night-time game drives and daytime game walks within the Khwai area.

Simon Byron was the best guide we have ever had. His knowledge of wildlife, tracking and spotting was exceptional. He was prepared to spend as much time as necessary to follow a single sighting and observe developments. The tented camp worked well and enabled us to feel in contact with the environment. The meals in camp and the timing were exactly what was required, giving sufficient time for the drives.

The whole trip was wonderful, especially our leader Joe Ramsden.

The guide made the holiday. He was excellent and his knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to the subject was first class. He quickly found exciting events for us on each drive and we particularly liked the fact that he stuck with an individual animal or group in order to follow the progress. We were definitely not there to stop, take a few pictures and move on, we were able to watch the whole scene unfold and thereby gain a much better understanding of the whole interconnection between the animals, birds and environment. The camp staff were also fantastic and they looked after us well.

The two areas visited offered a contrast of habitat. The sightings were excellent and close up; Simon took the time and effort to make sure we all had good views for photos as well as following the animals and explaining the scenarios and behaviour as they unfolded. Seeing big adult male Lions within a few feet of the vehicle, following African Wild Dog (and pups) on a chase, watching Leopards stalking and Cheetah running all went to make this a safari to remember.

This holiday was fun, exciting and, most of all, the wildlife sightings were outstanding. The trip was excellent and the guides were fantastic.

We throughly enjoyed our trip to Botswana. What a wonderful country for animals and diversity of scenery. Will always remember sipping our sundowners within 5 yards of a pride of lions. Camp staff were great providing excellent food in very restrictive circumstances - we were very well looked after.

It was a fantastic trip. The Camp staff were great and looked after us all. They always made sure that I, as a vegetarian, had something to eat. The whole camping experience was fantastic and it was a great thrill to have elephants eating from trees a few yards away from my tent.... I would also like to point out that the service I have received prior to my departure has been first class. On a couple of occasions I emailed questions through and received responses within 24 hours.

As always a wonderful trip with Naturetrek. All the guides and camp staff in Botswana were first class. The guides were very knowledgable not just about the birds but all the animals, from the biggest Elephant to the smallest Frog.

I have been on safaris since 1983 in numerous countries, self-drive and with other companions, but this tour/safari was top of the Premier League. Brilliant. 6 star.

Grant and Brent Reed are totally amazing. Their hospitality, modesty, sense of fun and safety, knowledge and enthusiasm was extraordinary.
