This new wildlife photography holiday will take you into the very heart of one of Africa’s most breathtaking wildlife events, the annual migration of 1.2 million Blue Wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of Plains Zebras and gazelles into Tanzania’s southern Serengeti. Between December and April these vast herds carpet the short grass plains of the Serengeti National Park and the neighbouring Ngorongoro Conservation Area creating a photography opportunity that is second to none. The herds are stalked by prides of Lions and speedy Cheetahs, whilst parties of graceful Masai Giraffes, families of African Elephants and numerous colourful birds make up an exciting supporting cast. To ensure you return with the best possible photo record of Tanzania and its wildlife, this tour will be led by an expert photographer-leader, who will be on hand throughout to offer photographic guidance and tuition and to ensure that all group members get the very best out of this holiday. Following a flight to Arusha in northern Tanzania, our wildlife photography safari begins with four nights overlooking the rim of the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera covering 260 square kilometres. Whilst here we will spend three full days exploring the crater floor, giving us plenty of time in which to enjoy and photograph the abundance of mammals and birds that call this microcosm of Africa home. The crater has a particularly dense population of Lions and is also home to Tanzania’s only regularly observed Black Rhino. Moving on, we drop out of the Crater Highlands onto the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti for a 7-night stay at the small Serengeti Explorer Camp. From this base we will head out in the camp’s open-sided vehicles (with opening roof) to slowly explore the surrounding grasslands and patches of acacia woods in search of the moving herds and a wealth of other wildlife, including Bat-eared Fox, Kirk’s Dik-dik, Spotted Hyena, Secretarybird, Martial Eagle and various colourful bee-eaters. A spectacular flight back to Arusha completes this safari although, if you think you may have a few spare memory cards remaining, you might like to consider extending your stay with time in another of Tanzania’s wildlife reserves.
