This new holiday celebrates both the terrestrial and marine wildlife of north-western Sri Lanka, focusing on the mammals and birds of Wilpattu National Park and the whales and dolphins that live offshore. We begin our holiday with a 4-night stay at a beautiful beach resort in the fishing village of Kalpitiya. This will be our base as we head offshore each morning in search of the cetaceans, birds and other marine-life that lives in the warm seas between Sri Lanka and India. Bottlenose and Spinner Dolphins are common, the latter often being seen in pods of several hundred animals, whilst, for the fortunate, rarer species such as Blue Whale, Sperm Whale and the shy Dugong are also seen from time to time. Birds to look out for during our time on the water include Gull-billed Tern, Persian and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Brown Noddy and Pomarine Skua. After each exciting morning at sea, the afternoons will be taken at a more leisurely pace with opportunities to birdwatch around the hotel, relax, or stroll along the sandy roads of the village to experience everyday life in Kalpitiya. Moving on, we drive north for two hours to the town of Anuradhapura for a 4-night stay in the comfortable Rajarata Hotel. This will be our next base while we explore the beautiful mixed forests of Wilpattu National Park. Our main quarry here will be the reserve’s top predator, the Sri Lankan Leopard, but we will also search for a variety of other mammals including Sloth Bear, Asian Elephant and Wild Boar, plus Sambar, Barking and Spotted Deer. Birds are abundant and include, amongst many others, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Forest Eagle Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Brown-capped Babbler and White-rumped Shama. The familiar reptilian outlines of Marsh Mugger crocodiles may be seen motionless in the water, whilst smaller reptiles to look out for include Bengal Monitor, Indian Cobra, Indian Rock Python and, if fortunate, perhaps the rare Sri Lankan Chameleon. For those wishing to maximise their chances of seeing Blue Whale we would recommend a 4-night extension to Weligama on Sri Lanka’s southern tip.
