Norway - Orcas, Humpbacks & Northern Lights - A Winter Arctic Cruise

Tour Code: NOR10

A 9-day winter holiday to northern Norway including a 7-night cruise on a 33-berth sailing schooner in search of Killer Whales, Humpback Whales and the Northern Lights.

9 days from £2895(inc flights) Land Only Price: £2545 SRS: £2545

In recent winters the precipitous fjords of northern Norway have become the stage for one of Europe's great wildlife spectacles. Between November and February, vast shoals of Herring have been congregating in the fjords and inlets in the region of Tromsø, several hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Such an enormous glut of food does not go unnoticed in the natural world and shadowing these huge shoals are pods of Orcas (Killer Whales), Humpback Whales and, overhead, White-tailed Eagles. This 9-day holiday will include 7 nights aboard the historic three-masted schooner s/v Rembrandt which accommodates just 33 guests. From this comfortable floating base we will explore the magnificent scenery of the north Norwegian fjords in search of the wintering whales, eagles and other wildlife. In early January there is sufficient light from the hidden sun to enjoy northern Norway's winter highlights and once the Sun has dipped away further, and darkness falls, the long winter nights are just perfect – weather permitting – for witnessing that other wonder of nature, the ethereal flickering of the Northern Lights.

  • Spectacular scenery of the Norwegian Fjords.
  • Orca (Killer Whales) and Humpback Whales.
  • Join the 33-berth sailing schooner s/v Rembrandt.
  • Look for the Northern Lights.
  • Explore the pretty Arctic town of Tromsø.
  • Birds including White-tailed Eagles, Common and King Eiders & Long-tailed Duck.
  • Led by a Naturetrek naturalist & experienced expedition crew.

Food

All food and accommodation is included in the cost of the holiday except for evening meals in Oslo and lunches on Day 2 and Day 9.

Accommodation

For this cruise we will join the 33-berth s/v Rembrandt van Rijn, a 50 metre three-masted sailing schooner. The Rembrandt can accommodate a maximum of 33 passengers in 15 small twin cabins and a triple cabin. In Oslo we use a comfortable airport hotel with private facilities.

Highlights: Stunning scenery and magical experience of no sun but beautiful huge moon. Wonderful little places where we moored for the night. Sightings of far more whales than we had expected to see and so close to our ship. Moving experience of listening to vocalisation of nearby Humpback whale thanks to our Expedition Leader Mario with his hydrophone equipment. Small size of group that really gelled. Lovely ship's crew and great food. Overall a really memorable holiday.

David and Mario were superb. Their combined knowledge of the aurora, stars, birds, wildlife, environment and ecology added a greater depth to my understanding of everything. We saw everything I hoped to see and more besides.

We saw Orcas, Humpbacks and the Northern Lights within the first two days. Thoroughly enjoyed this tour under the leadership of David and Mario. This tour met all our hopes and expectations.
