The Forest of Dean — Mammal Special!
We are delighted to announce a special mammal-focused departure of our popular ‘The Forest of Dean’ weekend break on Friday 20th October 2017 — with Dormice, Badgers and Wild Boar among the key mammals we’ll be hoping to see.
The Forest of Dean is an area of mixed forest covering an area in excess of 100 square kilometres. This is one of the last remaining ancient forests in the UK and plays host to a wealth of exciting wildlife. Over this short break we will spend time out on foot covering different trails and visiting various sites, with a focus on finding and watching the mammals and birds that call the forest home.
From our comfortable hotel base in the heart of the forest, we will make daily walks exploring the surrounding trails and on this ‘Mammal Special’ tour we have the opportunity to help with the monitoring of a very special species, the Hazel Dormouse. As we check the dormouse boxes we will have an excellent chance of seeing this threatened and incredibly endearing British mammal, and even to handle them (under expert guidance) whilst learning about their unusual lifecycle. We will also watch for Badgers coming to a garden lawn one evening — with close views possible — and we hope to encounter Wild Boar while spotlighting on a night-drive!
