Kerala: ‘ring of fire’ annular eclipse tour in December 2019!

Annular eclipse

Annular eclipse

After a flight to Mangalore via Mumbai, we will arrive on Christmas Eve at our base for three nights – a delightful hotel in Kerala. Our hotel, set amongst beautiful gardens and close to the beach, will provide a relaxing base for Christmas and for witnessing the annular eclipse. On the morning of Boxing Day the eclipse will begin just after 8am local time. The annular phase, which lasts for three minutes, will occur just before 9.30am. The sight of the sun shining like a ‘ring of fire’ around the moon and blocking out 93% of sunlight will be one of the highlights of the tour. During December the weather is typically dry and sunny along the Malabar Coast of India so we have a very good chance of clear skies for the eclipse. (Naturetrek will provide you with eclipse glasses to enable you to watch the eclipse in complete safety.) After the eclipse you will have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Next we drive inland, through the Western Ghats to Nargarhole National Park on the eastern side of the range. We’ll be based for five days in Nagarhole National Park for the second part of the tour. The park’s rich biodiversity includes large mammals such as Asian Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Gaur (Indian Bison), a variety of deer species, primates and many smaller mammals such as fruit bats, and species of squirrel and mongoose. The park is also home to abundant birdlife including Racket-tailed Drongo, Indian Peafowl, Grey Jungle Fowl, Pied and Common Kingfishers, woodpeckers, Malabar Trogon, Jerdon’s Baza, Crested Serpent Eagles, Honey Buzzards and Black-headed Cuckoo Shrikes, as well as barbets, owls, cuckoos, flycatchers, minivets, herons and ibises. We’ll make excursions into the park every day by 4WD and boat in search of its natural history. After five wonderful days of wildlife-viewing the tour ends with a drive to Bangalore for our flights home via Mumbai.
