Portugal's Wolves & Dolphins - A Photographic Tour

Tour Code: PRT08

A 7-day photographic tour based near Lisbon focusing on Bottlenose Dolphins and Iberian Wolves as well as some birdwatching.

7 days from £1495(inc flights) Land Only Price: £1345 SRS: £150

This week-long single-centre tour focuses on photographing Bottlenose Dolphins and Iberian Wolves, and is based in delightful scenery close to Portugal's elegant capital city, Lisbon. The sheltered Bay of Setubal is home to mainland Portugal's only resident population of Bottlenose Dolphins and we will head out into the Sado Estuary with local guides and our own photography expert, to endeavour to get close-up views and photographs of these charismatic species. For the next part of our holiday we will drive 30 kilometres into the steep wooded hills and scrubland north of Malveira. Here we will visit the Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre founded by Grupo Lobo, a charity dedicated to the conservation of Wolves in Portugal. We will hope to get good views of the Wolves here from observation towers within the 17-hectares of enclosures. Although our main focus will be on photography, we will also find time for some sightseeing in Lisbon.

Day 6 Lisbon

Day 7 Fly UK

We were invited by the Portuguese National Tourist Office to make a visit to the area around Lisbon last year, to explore the birdwatching and wildlife potential of the area. What we found were convenient direct flights, warm hospitality, a great climate, excellent food and wine, and bird-rich marshes and wetlands. We also spent some time in the sheltered Bay of Setúbal which is home to mainland Portugal’s only permanently resident population of Bottlenose Dolphins.  Aided by local guides on this new tour, we aim to find, watch and photograph this obliging group of dolphins as they hunt, leap and socialise in the estuary. From a comfortable catamaran, our own Naturetrek photography expert will be on hand to help advise you on how to achieve the best results from your camera.

For the next part of our holiday we will drive 30 kilometres into the steep wooded hills and scrubland north of Lisbon to Malveira, where we will visit the Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre, founded by the Grupo Lobo (a charity dedicated to the conservation of Wolves in Portugal). For a few years now, Naturetrek groups have been enjoying views of Iberian Wolves just over the border in Spain on a dedicated wolf-watching tour. Views of those wild animals in Zamora are often at distance though, and quality photographic opportunities are hard to come by. Here at the 17-hectare Recovery Centre, large enclosures are characterised by good vegetation cover and a variety of different rocky outcrops and other interesting features, providing quality shelter and refuge for the resident Wolves. We’ll spend plenty of time at leisure here, where Wolves can be seen from observation towers located at strategic points around the site. Our photography expert will be able to provide plenty of pointers on getting the best from your SLR. During our time here we will also learn about the conservation and status of the Iberian Wolf in Portugal, and about some of the varied projects in which the centre is involved.

A visit to this region would not be complete without exploring Lisbon, a fascinating city of elegant azulejo façades and broad jacarandalined avenues, and on one day there will be time for some sightseeing in this historic city.

After a week of gentle photographic opportunity and exploration, wildlife-watching and autumn warmth we should return home with plenty of superb shots of dolphins, Wolves and birds, and a taste of traditional Portuguese hospitality.
