The Vercors massif straddles the Isère and Drôme departments of south-eastern France and is made up of scenic plateaux, valleys and mountains that cover an area of about 520 square miles. Composed predominantly of limestone, the region’s diverse karst landscapes hold a very rich flora which, in turn, supports a wealth of natural history, particularly insect-life. It is the latter on which we will focus on this new tour, especially the butterflies and moths of the Vercors, as we enjoy this quiet, unspoiled backwater of France.

We begin with a flight to Lyon, from where we will transfer to our base at La Chapelle for seven nights. This is a friendly, family-run hotel, offering locally sourced, organic meals. We will set off each day either on foot from our hotel, or by minibus, to explore sites at varying altitudes, walking amongst the spectacular scenery of rocky peaks and outcrops, towering cliffs and deep gorges, woodlands and deep river valleys. In the region’s Alpine and sub-alpine pastures, such as those on the Col de la Chau and in the Parc Naturelle des Hauts Plateaux, we will look for high-altitude butterflies such as Moorland and Mountain Clouded Yellows; Scotch Argus; Almond-eyed, Woodland, Dewy, Bright-eyed and Common Brassy Ringlets; also Geranium Argus plus some of the higher altitude skippers such as Tufted Marbled.

On another day we will visit the Route Forestale de la Molière, a beautiful woodland area with clearings, in search of species such as Short-tailed, Damon, Silverstudded and Mazarine Blues; False Heath, Titania’s, Heath, Spotted, Silver-washed and Niobe Fritillary; Apollo; Grayling; Great Sooty Satyr and Dryad and a host of other species. We’ll also set a moth-trap on a couple of nights during the week, and before setting out on our walks we will examine our ‘catch’ and identify the moths. Several familiar species from home will feature amongst many that will be new to those who have never trapped outside the UK. We will break our walks each day with a picnic, enjoying some delicious local cheeses and charcuterie! Although our primary focus will be on butterflies and moths, we will not ignore the beautiful wild flowers that should

We had an excellent tour leader and our group were very keen and willing to participate. The scenery in the region of Vercor was spectacular and we were able to see many species of butterflies. Also birds and plants were seen and Paul was brilliant at his job - very knowledgable.
