Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, covers nearly 9,000 square kilometres of mountains, forests, lakes and grasslands and is one of the United States’ foremost wildlife reserves. It is home to both Grizzly Bear and Grey Wolf, plus North American Bison, Moose, Black Bear and an interesting variety of birds. In the ‘Fall’, as the days shorten and the colours of the landscape change from the greens of summer to a rich autumnal palette of russet, orange and gold, the mammals are busy preparing for the winter ahead and the resident birds are augmented by migrants from further north. On this new 14-day tour we will enjoy Yellowstone as the park makes its transition from summer to winter. The wildlife will be active, the holiday crowds have departed and the colours — weather permitting — spectacular. We will begin with a flight to Jackson Hole from where we will explore Yellowstone’s equally impressive neighbour, the Grand Teton National Park. Here we will see our first North American Bison and Moose, the bulls of the latter ready for the rut and resplendent with their full racks of antlers. Birds may include Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-rumped Warbler and a variety of waterfowl. Moving on, we will base ourselves in the town of West Yellowstone for four nights whilst we explore the western and central regions of the national park. We are now in the heart of the sunken caldera in which much of Yellowstone sits, the heat beneath our feet fuelling the geothermal pools and geysers that dot this region, including the park’s most famous (and regular) attraction, ‘Old Faithful’. Rocky Mountain Elk are common and we will need to keep an eye open for Black and Grizzly Bears, Pronghorn Antelope, Cooper’s Hawk and Clark’s Nutcracker. Next we will journey to the north-east and spend three nights based in the old mining town of Cooke City. From here we will explore the northern section of the park, including the colourful travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs and the dramatic Yellowstone Falls. We will, however, be concentrating in particular on the Lamar Valley, the regular haunt of one of Yellowstone’s packs of Grey Wolves and another reliable area for Grizzly Bear. Birds include American Dipper, Williamson’s Sapsucker and perhaps a flock of Black Rosyfinch atop the spectacular Beartooth Pass. Finally, we must leave Cooke City and we will spend our last night of the holiday in Bozeman before heading home.
