Wildlife holidays in Chile

The topography of Chile is extraordinary, with high peaks and plateaus, towering snow-capped volcanoes and vertiginous coastal mountains. The country forms a ribbon of land stretching over 4,000 kilometres from the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the subantarctic islands of the south.

Nowhere more than 180 kilometres wide, the country is separated from neighbouring Argentina by the Andes Mountains which create some of the most spectacular scenery in South America.

Thanks to its unusual geography, and a comprehensive domestic airline network, it is possible to visit a wide range of habitats within a single holiday in Chile – from the Andean snowline and seabird filled waters of the Pacific, to the south’s wild coastline and the beech forests bordering the Straits of Magellan at the very tip of the continent.

"Our Chile – Just Pumas tour explores Torres del Paine National Park and nearby localities in search of the elusive Puma. Other highlights to be enjoyed in this spectacular setting are Andean Condor, Chilean Flamingo and Guanaco."

What’s special about the wildlife?

The bird watching in Chile is superb and is likely to include such sought-after species as Andean Condor, Inca Tern, Andean Avocet, Magellanic Plover and the peculiar Diademed Sandpiper-plover.

The waters off the Chilean coast are rich in marine life, while inland there are some unusual mammals such as Guanaco and Andean Deer. Torres del Paine National park and adjacent localities offer reliable Puma encounters amongst stunning patagonian scenery.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SAYING ABOUT OUR Chile HOLIDAYS

Chile - Just Pumas!

The trip more than lived up to our expectations. We saw 15 different Pumas & they were very active too! We saw them eating kills, hunting & playing. Several of our encounters were very close and allowed us to get some superb shots! Our guide Sebastian & tracker Jorge worked well together, always respecting the Puma's well being and giving them space to move where they wanted to go, which resulted in natural & relaxed looking images of these wonderful cats.

Chile - Just Pumas!

Transportation and group size worked very well. The guides and drivers were very keen and looked after us very well without being overbearing. The location of Torres del Paine was spectacular and the guide was keen to get us to see all the 'special' scenic sights. The flights across South America were spectacular in themselves especially in Chile where the Andes were amazing even flying over Torres del Paine and beside Mt Aconcagua! The King Penguin extension was well worth it not only for the colony but for the wildlife in the Strait of Magellan viewed from the ferry.

Chile - Just Pumas!

Watching Puma's was balanced with bird watching and visiting scenic places. We had lots of opportunities to walk about and were not inactive in the bus too much. We were lucky to be in a small group and have good weather. I felt very privileged to be able to watch Puma's at close quarters and study their behaviour. Wonderful!
