David Thornton

David grew up in Hampshire, the son of a multi-generational Irish farming ancestry on his Father’s side, and horticulturists on his Mother’s side. The childhood home was directly opposite sprawling woodland, along with heathland and a fishing lake. Along with childhood holidays to the family farm in Ireland, it was the woodlands where David fell in love with investigating all the flora and fauna that the various habitats had to offer. From birds to badgers, fish to foxes, dragonflies to deer, he was always busy watching, learning and investigating.

Back then, the flora was only of interest if you could eat it or climb up it…! However, in time his family taught him how to plant vegetables and fruit, as well as the joy of developing plants for beauty and also to attract wildlife.

David’s interest in horticulture took root and blossomed (sorry!) from there. After many years working hands-on for horticultural companies he then passed various botanical college courses, was heavily involved in the procurement, planting and design of the London 2012 Olympics sites. Large multi-acre private design and build projects followed before he started his own horticultural company in 2014.

David has given guided walks for The Rambler’s Association, schools and given talks to The Women’s Institute. He has a particular interest in companion planting, the symbiotic and harmonious relationships between plants, and plants and wildlife in general.

Still a keen birder and all-round avid naturalist, David also focuses on the cultural and historical uses of edible and medicinal plants over the ages. His simple mantra is that – if you allow yourself the time, then Mother Nature will always pleasantly surprise you, teach you and delight you – every day!
