Robin James Backhouse
Robin is a British professional educator and field guide based in Nairobi, Kenya. He is qualified with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) and also holds a UK Mountain Leader qualification. He moved to Kenya in 2020 after spending five years teaching Biology in international schools in South and Southeast Asia. His involvement with reptile conservation officially began in 2018 when he volunteered with Bali Reptile Rescue in Indonesia, carrying out snake rescue calls in the south of Bali. Since then he has also completed formal training with the African Snakebite Institute in South Africa. Robin still teaches but, together with Mirthe and Dickson, set up a reptile conservation and research organisation in 2022 and now devotes all of his spare time to the research, conservation and education about snakes in Kenya. He is the organisation’s biologist, photographer and field guide. Although he has a special interest in snakes, he considers himself an all-round naturalist and loves to share his passion for all forms of wildlife with clients. A keen photographer, Robin’s photos are widely published, having featured in a number of field guides, books, magazines and scientific publications. He has also used them to create a number of his own visual resources promoting snake awareness in the region. Robin is married and has two young children, both of whom share his love of the outdoors (and snakes!). Robin looks forward to leading clients on our Reptiles & Amphibians of Kenya tours.
