The tropical rainforest can be a challenging place to take successful wildlife photographs. It is often dark under the canopy and shutter speeds can be slow. Among other things, you will learn how to make the best use of your camera under these conditions, for example by use of natural light and appropriate use of flash as either main light or fill flash.
There will also be opportunities for macro photography, for example with some of the exquisite tree frogs or delicate orchids, whereas a wide-angle lens will come in useful for waterfalls or landscapes.
For the birds and mammals, a lens of at least 300mm focal length is recommended but we will also be spending time at feeding stations where fruit is put out specially to attract species. We will be setting up natural perches near the fruit feeders in order to get the most natural-looking shots.
One of the most sought-after species of birds to see and photograph in Costa Rica is the Resplendent Quetzal. The Mayan civilisation revered this bird as the most beautiful in the world and when you see one you will understand why. We will make a determined effort to see and record this bird in its mountain forest habitat during this trip.
