Summary
Spring in Canada is heralded by a tsunami of avian colour sweeping north through the country, as a kaleidoscope of brightly-hued wood-warblers, tanagers, orioles, vireos and other migrants fan out into the region’s vast forests, wetlands and grasslands to breed. Nowhere is this annual arrival more anticipated, and celebrated, than in the eastern province of Ontario which sits atop North America’s mighty Great Lakes, a natural barrier to migration which focuses and concentrates the birds into a few select spots. The most famous of these is Point Pelee, which juts south 15 kilometres into Lake Erie and is the first landfall for tired birds crossing the lake. Birders from far and wide also descend here in the spring, hoping to coincide with a so-called ‘wave day’ when the weather conditions conspire to drop tens of thousands of colourful warblers, and other passerines, onto the point to rest and feed. We, too, hope to witness such a fall on this new holiday which combines migrant-watching on Lake Erie’s northern shore with time exploring the hardwood forests of Ontario’s beautiful Algonquin National Park and a visit to the spectacular Niagara Falls.
- Visit Point Pelee & Long Point, two of the most famous ‘migrant traps’ in North America
- Numerous colourful wood-warblers including Cape May, Magnolia, Blackburnian & Chestnut-sided Warblers
- Explore Rondeau Provincial Park, home of the beautiful Prothonotary Warbler
- Numerous other migrants from flycatchers, cuckoos and thrushes to tanagers, sparrows & grosbeaks
