Summary
Join a naturalist and ‘bird migration’ enthusiast as we hope to encounter a range of bird species undergoing their autumn migration. Beachy Head acts as a mecca for a number of species as they aim to increase their fat reserves before flying south across the English Channel and onwards to their wintering grounds. The dense and vegetated valleys, hollows and small woodlands can hold a significant number of warblers, chats and flycatchers, whilst over the years a long list of exciting rarities have been found: Wryneck, Melodious Warbler, Ortolan Bunting and Montagu’s Harrier are just some of the potential visitors we may be lucky to see! Passerine activity can decrease rapidly towards late morning, therefore, we will turn our attention to searching for any birds-of-prey that may be migrating: Honey-buzzard, Osprey, Marsh Harrier and Hobby are all regular sightings here. Butterflies will also be focused on, with likely encounters of Clouded Yellows, Chalk Hill Blues and Silver-spotted Skippers. The earlier than normal start to the day is to maximise our chances of witnessing a large number of birds before they disappear inland!
