Summary
The north-west of England, comprising mountains, hidden valleys and beautiful limestone pavements are home to an excellent variety of butterflies, birds and wildflowers. The Lake District is renowned for its wonderful mountain scenery, but it's on these very mountains where the only population of Mountain Ringlet in England occurs. This altitudinal species thrives on the high peaks, however, in the Lake District, colonies can sometimes be found at lower elevations and within reach from the vehicle. This region during June and early July is also the ideal time to search for a wealth of other species, some of which are considered to be threatened within the UK; the High Brown Fritillary is one of these and resides at a few limestone outcrops close-by. We will have to pay close attention to these fritillaries as their close relative - the Dark Green Fritillary - is very similar in appearance. Other excellent species we hope to find include the Northern Brown Argus, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and the Large Heath. This landscape is also prolific for the diversity of wild flowers and we hope to find specimens of Dark Red Helleborine too.
