Summary
The Canadian island of Newfoundland – which is part of the much larger province of Newfoundland and Labrador – sits at the easternmost extremity of the North American continent. Newfoundland is a spectacular island of mountains, boreal forests and rugged coastlines, not only visited in the summer by clouds of seabirds, but by a parade of intricately-sculpted icebergs too. The birdlife here is a fascinating blend of Old and New Worlds which constantly surprises and delights the visitor. Although some of the species are familiar to us in Europe, others such as the Canada Jay, Grey-cheeked Thrush, the ubiquitous Fox Sparrow and the colourful wood-warblers are quintessentially North American. On this 15-day tour we will traverse Newfoundland from south-east to north-west, starting in the island’s quaint capital of St John’s. From there we will take a boat trip into Witless Bay to enjoy the region’s impressive seabird colonies, Humpback Whales and perhaps an iceberg or two. From Trepassey to the south we will explore the scenic Avalon Peninsula, home to Woodland Caribou and Moose, before we move to Charlottetown, our base whilst we enjoy the boreal birdlife in the nearby Terra Nova National Park. We will end our holiday within the spectacular landscapes of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to, amongst others, Harlequin Duck, Mourning Warbler and the majestic Bald Eagle.
