Summary
The Totteridge and Dollis Valleys are hidden gems of flowing countryside right in the heart of the suburbs of north London. The valleys offer a large variety of habitats from ancient woodland, to shrubland and open farmland whilst acting as a migrant hotspot in spring and autumn.
In winter the valley holds flocks of Meadow Pipits, finches and thrushes and is also home to a large population of Little Owls which are easier to see during the winter. Although the owls are most active at dusk, we will try our luck at looking for them at a couple of known day roosts. As we head into spring, the valley's shape and the direction makes it one of the best places to experience migration. The wintering birds are replaced by House Martins, Swallows and plenty of warblers, including the possibility of Lesser Whitethroat and Grasshopper Warbler as the spring progresses. Red Kite, Hobby and Common Buzzard are resident as is one of London's largest colonies of Rooks. Other birdlife may include a variety of common woodland and farmland species. Firecrests are a possibility, as well as a chance of seeing passage migrants which in the last few years have included the likes of Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher, Whinchat, Stonechat, Yellow Wagtail and Wheatear. August is also a good time for migrant passerines.
Aside from the birdlife, these valleys are home to species such as Willow Emerald Damselflies and Wasp Spider and there is also always the chance of seeing or hearing Muntjac.
In December we will meet at 8:30am with the 6 or 7 mile walk finishing around 4pm. In spring and summer the walk starts at 9am and continues till 4:30pm. Walking can be difficult after periods of wet weather when walking boots or wellies are recommended.
