Summary
The island of Lundy, now designated as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) is a key resting place for hundreds, if not thousands of birds that migrate south during the autumn en route to their wintering grounds in sub-Sahara Africa. The island is also home to 330 species of flowering plants, including six that are considered to be nationally scarce. On an annual basis, the vegetated valleys and exposed cliff edges are vital habitats for the likes of Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Wheatears and perhaps, something rarer. In recent years, the island has enjoyed the likes of White's Thrush, Red-breasted Flycatcher and countless Yellow-browed Warblers! Out to sea, if conditions are right, Manx and Sooty Shearwaters may be seen passing through, along with the likes of Sabine's Gulls and even Leach's Storm Petrels; calmer weather will be more reliable for cetaceans and the likes of Risso's Dolphins, Minke Whales and Atlantic White-sided Dolphins can pass by at any time. Close to our accommodation, there will be daily bird-ringing sessions, and throughout the trip, we will be in close contact with the staff in case any interesting birds are found. There are no cars on Lundy, therefore we can enjoy the beauty of this island on foot amongst the most peaceful conditions.
- Excellent location for migrating birds: Wheatears, Ring Ouzels and Yellow-browed Warblers
- Join a bird-ringing session: Goldcrests and a variety of birds up close and personal
- Such rarities in recent years have included White's Thrush and Pallas's Warblers
- Lundy Cabbage is common on the island and supports several endemic insects
- Enjoy scenic walks on this beautiful island
- Other wildlife include Grey Seals, and hopefully, cetaceans including possible Risso's Dolphin
- Amazing night sky clarity; the island has Special Night Sky Status
- Daily moth-trap sessions
