Summary

On this 2-centre holiday we’ll explore the contrasting landscapes of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, Black Sea coast and Danube Delta. Beginning in Transylvania, we’ll search the rocky peaks and dense spruce forests of the Carpathians for birds such as Wallcreeper, flowers and Brown Bears. Next we head to the Danube Delta – a wetland area larger than Coto Donana and the Camargue combined. From the comfort of our floating hotel we’ll explore a maze of channels and lakes, marvelling at the sheer numbers of pelicans, herons and other waterbirds all around us. Our tour ends with two days exploring the steppes and marshes adjacent to the Black Sea coast, home to an interesting flora and birds such as Levant Sparrowhawk and Sombre Tit.

Grade A/B. Mainly easy day walks, with a couple of moderate walks in the mountains which can be up to 5 miles in length and may include some steeper or rougher sections.

Situated on the western shore of the Black Sea, with Bulgaria on its southern borders, Romania has a surprising variety of habitats. From the extensive wetlands of the Danube basin, to the high peaks of the Carpathians; from the evergreen forests of the north-west, to the rolling plains of the east, Romania boasts a remarkable abundance of wild flowers, interesting butterflies and mammals, as well as a long list of exciting birds. Furthermore, its Black Sea coast, running from north to south, is part of a major flyway for migrating birds travelling between their breeding grounds in Eurasia and their winter quarters in the Mediterranean, Africa or further east.

Our holiday is centred around the Danube Delta and the Carpathian Mountains. About 90 kilometres from the mouth of the Danube, the river divides into three channels. Enclosed between them lie 3,000 square kilometres of reedbeds, shallow lakes and forested islands. It is a wetland area larger than the Carmargue and the Coto Doñana combined! Within the delta nest over 4,000 pairs of Cormorants, 3,000 pairs of Night Herons, 2,000 pairs of Squacco Herons, 1,200 pairs of Purple Herons, 1,500 pairs of Glossy Ibis and a large percentage of the European population of Great Egrets, Pygmy Cormorants, and Dalmatian and White Pelicans. Good numbers of grebes, ducks, terns, geese and five or more pairs of White-tailed Eagles make up the supporting cast! Needless to say, the delta is a truly wonderful place and, in ornithological terms, probably deserves the title of Europe’s single most valuable habitat.

We begin our holiday with a flight to Bucharest, capital of Romania. From here we travel to Vulcan, deep in the Transylvanian Carpathians. This chain of mountains is alpine in nature, with high rocky peaks rising above dense forests of spruce and Beech. We will be based in a guesthouse near Zarnesti, in an attractive small town that offers easy access to the surrounding peaks. From it, we will be able to explore the local pine woods and rocky crags in search of woodpeckers, Nutcrackers, Black Redstarts and alpine passerines such as Wallcreepers. Beyond the treeline, lush alpine meadows host a wealth of flowering plants. In the evenings we will watch for the Brown Bears and occasional Wolves that descend from the forests in search of food.

After two full days in the mountains we travel east to Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta. During our stay in the delta, we will be travelling and sleeping aboard a floating hotel. On it, we will travel through the delta’s numerous channels and lakes, thereby gaining a unique perspective on the area and its wildlife. We will also have the opportunity to visit one of the isolated islands where we will be able to explore on foot and see the way of life in one of the remote villages of the area. By visiting several habitats within the delta, we should have amassed an impressive total of species by the end of our visit; however, the enduring memory of a trip to the delta is the sheer spectacle of hundreds of pelicans, herons and cormorants constantly flying to and from their vast breeding colonies.

We will spend the latter part of our holiday exploring the rich complex of lakes, marshes, steppe and woodland that lie immediately to the south of the delta. We will visit the Black Sea coast, and the salt marshes on the edge of Lake Sinoie where migrating waders feed alongside breeding Avocets, pratincoles and Kentish Plovers. To the south of the delta, a small lake merits our attention. Amongst its large gull and tern colony, grebes, Black-winged Stilts and Mediterranean Gulls breed. In forest nearby, a range of woodland species — including several woodpeckers, Sombre Tit and Ortolan Bunting — are found, together with an outstanding variety of butterflies and wild flowers. This is an excellent area for raptors with the possibility of Booted Eagle and Levant Sparrowhawk over the forest, whilst Eastern Imperial Eagles are sometimes seen soaring over the plains to the south.

Finally we must travel back to Bucharest, breaking the journey as we pass lakes worthy of our interest. We will leave Romania satisfied with the memories of some of the best birdwatching to be found in Europe, together with an exceptional range of plants and mammals.

Keith Buchanan has more than 30 years' experience of working on biodiversity and landscape issues in the UK and internationally. Until August 2008 Keith was designing and leading a major project for Natural England to understand the impact of climate change on wildlife and landscapes. Prior to that he was a Programme Director within the Countryside Agency, and responsible for that Agency's work in relation to National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, climate change and land management. Since 2008 he has been freelance, and has led wildlife watching groups to many parts of Europe ,the Caribbean and South America and worked on biological expeditions in Indonesia, Central America, South America, Madagascar and South Africa.

Neil McMahon grew up in Northamptonshire and, from a very young age, developed an interest in the natural world. His first love is the study and identification of wild birds and he enjoys the challenge of trying to identify birds by the way they move and act as well as by their calls and songs. His passion for bird and wildlife-watching has taken him all around the world and he's visited more than 50 countries. Neil is a retired Police Officer and, when not leading Naturetrek tours, spends much of his time completing various conservation and wildlife management surveys as well as volunteering for his local Wildlife Trust. He is also a licensed Bird Ringer and Trainer. During the winter months he maintains numerous wild bird feeding stations in central Northamptonshire and is a serving committee member of the Northants Bird Club.

Andy Bunten has been an obsessive enthusiast about wildlife ever since he can remember. Educated at Cambridge, Newcastle and Imperial College, he then embarked on a career in nature conservation. He has worked for local government, wildlife trusts and, for 26 years, the RSPB. He initially worked in RSPB Scotland then headed south to be the Regional Director for the South East of England for 5 years before, in 1991, moving to the North of England to take up the reins of Director there. An experienced lecturer, Andy has cruised extensively completing over 20 trips ranging from South America to the Philippines and from Argentina to Svalbard. Now an Environmental Consultant, Andy is an enthusiastic traveller and has led wildlife groups to numerous places around the world including the Seychelles, France, Egypt, Costa Rica, Panama, Borneo, Norway and Spitsbergen. Over the last few years, he has led Naturetrek holidays in France, Romania, Hungary, Sweden, Spain and Scotland. He loves leading trips!

Andy lives on the edge of Dartmoor in South Devon. He’s been a keen birder and naturalist for as long as he can remember and has enjoyed a varied career divided between conservation work in Britain and Ireland, school teaching and wildlife tour leading. He started leading for Naturetrek way back in 1997 and has now led over 150 tours to a wide range of destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and Antarctica. When not currently leading tours Andy teaches geography and history to teenagers and in his spare time he explores the natural history of Dartmoor and the South Hams and serves on the records committee of Devon Birds. He also makes regular trips to the west of Ireland to visit his children and grandchildren.

Luca is an Italian naturalist from Treviso. He started birding during his childhood and gradually became more and more interested in all aspects of nature, especially butterflies, reptiles and orchids. He spends much of his year exploring the varied habitats of the Adriatic basin, including the wetlands, mountains, islands, forests ... and much more! After graduating with an honours degree in Natural Sciences, Luca later became a nature guide. He has been guiding natural history groups since 2012, including Naturetrek groups in the Dolomites, Sicily and further afield since 2015.

Byron is an Ecuadorian Ecologist and Field Ornithologist who has been working as a researcher and bird watching tour leader since 2000. A keen birder and nature lover by 'nature', Byron has a vast knowledge of the neotropical and Western Palearctic avifauna, particularly in his native Ecuador and other neotropical countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Colombia and the Caribbean region, including southern USA. His sharp ears and eyes permit him to locate the most elusive forest-dwelling birds in the field, successfully leading more than two-hundred trips so far! As a Field Ornithologist, Byron has contributed with many important discoveries for the Ecuadorian Ornithology, all published in scientific magazines and bulletins, such as the first record for Ecuador of the Thicket Antpitta (Hylopezus dives), Feb. 2007; the rediscovery of the Yellow-eared Toucanet (Selenidera spectabilis), Aug. 2006; and the discovery of the Choco Vireo (Vireo masteri), Sep 2004, A New Bird Species for Ecuador. Byron currently works as an independant Wildlife Consultant for leading wildlife companies and conservation organisations, having also become actively involved in many birding and conservation programmes in Spain, where his birding field skills have rapidly made him one of the authorities amongst the Iberian wildlife world. He endorses Leica Optics and Gitzo tripods, and currently lives in west Dorset, England, with his daughter Isabel and fiancé Gail.

Bob enjoys leading groups and helping people to enjoy the natural world, which serve as a welcome antidote to his challenging day job as Director for OneKind, an animal welfare charity based in Edinburgh. Bob is an experienced naturalist with extensive knowledge of wildlife, nature conservation and animal welfare issues both in Scotland and internationally.

Bob was born in North Yorkshire, and spent much of his childhood in the Yorkshire Dales. His passion for nature led him to join the Harrogate and District Naturalists Society, in which he soon became a prominent member. His career in nature conservation started with two head warden posts on the Farne Islands before moving to Scotland to work for the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), undertaking Countryside Ranger/Naturalist roles at lowland sites in Dumfries and Galloway. A promotion to Countryside Manager for the Highlands and Islands meant overseeing the work of Rangers, as well as being involved with wider countryside management. His work involved the management of reserves including the mountainous areas of Glencoe, Kintail, West Affric and Torridon, and iconic islands such as Iona, Canna, Fair Isle and St Kilda. Bob also managed the Countryside Ranger and Warden Service for Scotland's first National Park, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, before joining the RSPB in 2007. Bob was the head of the investigations and species protection team for the RSPB for 14 years, fighting wildlife crime both in the UK and internationally. He is now the Director for OneKind, an animal welfare charity based in Edinburgh, which exposes cruelty and persecution to Scotland’s animals via investigations, research and campaigning.

Bob has much experience with wildlife overseas, having taken trips to Antarctica, Peru, South Africa and Europe. Bob has assisted in a vulture feeding project in the Spanish Pyrenees, Iberian Lynx watching in Spain and the nest monitoring of Bearded Vultures in France and Spain. In recent years he has worked on trips to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Portugal, Ireland, Romania, Switzerland and the Scottish Islands, including St Kilda and Fair Isle. He's an expert on birds and mammals, and has specialist knowledge of birds of prey and seabirds, as well as field experience of using camera traps and remote surveillance techniques.
