South-east Alaska, also known as the Alaskan Panhandle, is a narrow strip of mountains, islands, glaciers, fjords and waterways that is sandwiched between British Columbia, in Canada, and the Pacific Ocean. It is a remote and sparsely populated land, covering nearly 100,000 square kilometres yet is home to just 70,000 people, a quarter of whom live in Juneau! Much of south-east Alaska remains in a state of pristine wilderness, free from roads, habitation or any other trace of human life. The only way, therefore, to explore this beautiful region, is by boat. From the comfort of the small 12-berth sailing ketch, ‘Island Odyssey’, you will go in search of such exciting mammals as Black and Grizzly Bears (the latter fishing for salmon), Wolves, Orcas (Killer Whales), Dall’s Porpoise, Steller Sea Lions and ‘bubble-net feeding’ Humpback Whales, plus a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, all backed by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Americas.
