This was my first Naturetrek holiday and I can't think of what could be improved. Our guides, Steve and Richard, provided a wealth of information and their enthusiasm for the wildflowers was infectious. It was a completely unique experience for me and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.

Summary
Upper Teesdale is a plant-lover’s paradise. The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, of which Upper Teesdale is an integral part, became the first area in Britain to be awarded the status of a UNESCO European and Global Geopark in June 2003. It has an incredible level of plant (and animal) diversity and during this short break we will visit some of the main botanical hotspots of this unique and scenic limestone region, visiting a wide range of habitats from low-lying hay meadows, rough grazing pastures and juniper woods to limestone grassland.
- Biggest diversity of rare plants & species in one location in Britain
- Search for rare Arctic-alpine flora
- Melancholy Thistle, Meadow Crane’s-bill & Sweet Cicely on road verges
- Visit botanical hotspots & see as many species of the Teesdale Assemblage as possible
- Black Grouse, Red Grouse, Lapwing & Curlew
- Walk along River Tees & visit the famous waterfalls of Low & High Force
Grading
There will be a reasonable amount of quite strenuous walking on this holiday, covering between two and 10 miles each day, but this will be at a slow `botanising pace'.Outline Itinerary

Our tour leader, Steve Gater, was a fantastic fountain of knowledge about all things botanical, also birds and anything else really. He went the extra mile to help us find the minutest specimens, for example, just one lesser twayblade found in acres of moorland!
M.S, South Yorkshire, July 19 -
A small group of fellow amateur botanists enjoyed a few days in this wild, empty and very beautiful landscape with and expert tour leader. The habitats we visited varied from limestone, to acid to riverside and fells.

A botany trip to Teesdale with an excellent guide - professional, knowledgeable, flexible and fun to be with. The rest of the (small) group were also good companions. I learned a lot and we saw and identified some wonderful plants.
A.M. East Sussex, June 18 -
Dawn Nelson was an excellent tour leader and superb botanist. I am not a botanist but she was very patient in answering my questions and helping me to get to know better some of the magical plants and flowers of Teesdale.

Tour Leader: Steve Gater
Steve's had a life-long interest in wildlife, particularly plants, birds and butterflies. After graduating in biology and completing a PhD, he taught for many years, running field trips in the Yorkshire dales and elsewhere. As headteacher, he led trips to three continents before retiring to concentrate on conservation work. He established Durham Wildlife Trust botany group, chaired DWT and edited the 5th edition of The Natural History of Upper Teesdale. He especially enjoys giving talks and training, leading walks and surveying in his home county. Other credits to his name include being the secretary of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland and is the editor of newly published first edition ‘The natural history of Upper Weardale (companion volume to the 'Upper Teesdale' book). Steve is also the current President of Darlington & Teesdale Naturalists' Field Club.

There are few more pleasing sights in the natural world than a meadow filled with wildflowers. Seeing plants in their native habitat is always exciting and our flower tours offer you an incredible choice, from dazzling tropical blooms and the thrill of finding elusive orchids or delicate alpines, to seeing island endemics or British flora. Our tours range from week-long holidays focusing on the ‘Alpine flowers of the Swiss Alps’, the ‘Italian Dolomites’ and the ‘Alpine Flowers of Slovenia’s Julian Alps’, to orchid-hunting on Italy’s Gargano Peninsula and searching for the Autumn Plants of Greece’s Peloponnese. We also visit more remote areas of the world in search of plant-life, from the Tien Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan where we look for wild tulips, to the rainforests and spiny deserts of Madagascar where over 80% of the flora is endemic.
Many of us want to know more about the plants we see around us. Whether inspired by an appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of flowers, or a more focused desire to identify individual species, everyone with an interest in botany will derive pleasure from joining one of Naturetrek’s flower tours.

In addition to our dedicated flower tours, we also offer holidays with a wider theme to encompass birds, butterflies and other aspects of natural history as well as the flora. Our spring tours to 'Crete' and ‘The Island of Cyprus’ are both timed to allow us to enjoy the botanical highlights as well as the spring bird migration, whilst ‘Croatia and Slovenia – Spring in Istria’ also allows time to enjoy a little of the local culture. ‘Romania – the Wildlife of Transylvania’ combines an appreciation of the flora of the Carpathian Mountains with birding, butterflying and a trip to look for Brown Bears from a purpose built hide, and our holidays in both the ‘French Pyrenees’ and the ‘Spanish Pyrenees’ combine birds, butterflies and botany throughout the week.

Naturetrek Short Break Wildlife Tours
Short breaks are becoming increasingly popular and in response to the high demand for this type of holiday we are continuing to increase our programme both within the UK and abroad. Most of our short breaks are within Europe, for convenience of travel.

A selection of our UK short breaks:
- A winter bird watching break in Norfolk

- A wildlife weekend in the New Forest
A selection of our overseas short breaks:
- In Spain we look for the world’s rarest cat, the Iberian Lynx
- Wolves on the plains in rural northern Spain
- An exploration of La Brenne’s exceptionally rich butterfly-life in northern France

"We offer two superb short breaks to the lovely island of Madeira in search of whales, dolphins and seabirds. It’s hard to beat our Just Brown Bears trip for families, while if you fancy something off the beaten track, try Estonia in Early Spring for some excellent spring birdwatching."

Flight-free Wildlife Holidays
At Naturetrek we make full use of the Eurostar rail service through the channel tunnel, and of the ferry routes between England’s south coast and France and Spain, to offer a range of ‘flightless’ wildlife holidays in Belgium, Holland, France and Spain. In addition, we also offer the widest selection of wildlife holidays within the UK, none of which require a flight to participate in. Therefore, if you prefer not to fly, for whatever reason, we have a range of varied and exciting wildlife holidays for you to choose from, and we are committed to regularly adding more.
It is also the case that many of our other holidays within Europe are also accessible by rail. Generally, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and we’d be pleased to offer advice to anybody who wishes to join any of our tours within Europe by a means other than flying!
