A beautiful sunny day exploring the different habitats around Walberswick, starting immediately from the car park with a viewing of a glossy Ibis. The morning continued with lots of sightings. Having the scope gave us fantastic views of the different birds as Brian gave a wealth of information and facts. We were all ready for our lunch and wondering if the afternoon could be any better. We were not disappointed, fantastic close view of a Dartford Warbler and a Woodlark singing his heart out before landing on a nearby football goalpost. After a wonderful day we went back tired and happy. Brian was an excellent guide, whose local knowledge was invaluable. Most impressively, he identified some rare garganey ducks which were quite a distance away. Without his expertise we would have missed so much.

- The birdlife of Walberswick on the Suffolk coast
- A walk along the beach and through reedbeds
- Heathland birds include Dartford Warbler & Woodlark
Spring:
From the harbour, we take a relaxed clockwise walk south along the shingle bank checking the sea, shore and pools for waders such as Sanderling and Spotted Redshank and perhaps the first Wheatears. Out to sea there is often a good chance of Gannet, Scoter and Red-throated Diver. The famous reedbed is lively with Bearded Tit, Marsh Harrier and Sedge Warbler, plus the chance of Great Egret and Bittern booming. In the afternoon we stroll onto the common, checking the heather and gorse for Dartford Warbler, Stonechat and Woodlark, all of which should be in song. Nightingales arrive in mid April and can then be heard in song.
Summer:
Marsh Harriers quarter the reedbeds which are also home to plentiful Bearded Tits, Sedge and Reed Warblers, elusive Bittern, while Lapwing and Redshank breed in the cut areas. A small number of Turtle Dove are sometimes present, while Stonechats and Grasshopper Warblers inhabit the scrubby edges of the marshes. Hobbies chase the numerous dragonflies, among them Four-spotted Chaser, Norfolk, Southern and Brown Hawkers. Incredibly, autumn begins in July for shorebirds and on the shore pools we could well pick up the first returning Spotted Redshanks or Wood Sandpipers.
Autumn:
As autumn draws in, the Suffolk coast is a haven for passage migrants as they head south. Wheatears and Whinchats dot the areas round the village, and finches, buntings and pipits move south. Commoner shorebirds include Ruff, Curlew, Little Stint and Common Sandpipers and there is always the chance of something more exciting. After the breeding season the reedbeds can seem full of Bearded Tits. it is a good time to see Bittern as they are more active at this time of year, and late Hobbies and Short-eared Owls can be seen quartering the marshes.
Winter:
In winter, good numbers of Shoveler, Teal and Wigeon gather on the coastal lagoons, alongside Black-tailed Godwits, Curlew and good numbers of Lapwing. Rock Pipits and Skylarks can be especially numerous along the beach joined by the local wintering flock of Snow Bunting. Marsh Harriers can be seen alongside Hen Harrier and the local Peregrine may come through searching the flocks of Lapwings. On the sea the local Scoter flock reaches its largest and may hold Velvet Scoter. On a crisp winter’s day there are few better places to be.

A gentle ramble through the area around Walberswick (Suffolk), concentrating mainly - but not entirely - on birds. The leader, Brian, is very knowledgeable and has an acute sense of hearing, able to identify birds that are barely audible. He knows the area extremely well, which means that he knows the best places to find particular species. An excellent - if rather cold - day was topped off by finding three Ring Ouzels. Naturetrek can't control the weather, and can't make particular species appear by magic, but they do manage everything else extremely well, and trips are always planned with a good knowledge of the patch and what it is likely to contain. Tour leaders are experts - often in many fields of wildlife - but also very good with people. Above all, when we hear so many reports of other companies treating their customers unfairly, Naturetrek is a company we can trust, absolutely.

I had a very enjoyable time and saw so many birds - which I wouldn't have noticed by myself! Brian Small was an excellent, knowledgeable leader, very approachable and friendly.

A splendid day with an excellent leader. Just six of us including the leader to meet with Covid restrictions. Explored the shoreline, marsh and in the afternoon the common at Walberswick. Excellent sightings of Bearded Tits and Goldcrests as well as migrating geese and winter thrushes. Over fifty species seen in all.

Leader’s experience and knowledge was very impressive. He shared his knowledge generously and was able to relate to both the inexperienced and experienced. Wide range of birds seen in varied habitats. An informative day with people with enquiring minds.
