Summary
Join our expert guides for a day trip to this fantastic, but perhaps less well-known, RSPB nature reserve. A diverse range of habitats can be found in a small area, all of which will be explored during our day, including sand dunes, flower-rich limestone grassland with ponds, and the large lake, the centrepiece of the reserve. Here, from the hide, we will overlook the bustling tern and gull colony, and observe the drama of the chicks at the point of fledging. In amongst the chaos, we may be able to spot Roseate Tern, a returning visitor in recent years. We will also spend time in the adjacent grasslands which abound with wildflowers, butterflies, and insects. Looking out over the Duddon Estuary, we can watch the terns fishing elegantly in the shallow water and catch up with the first wading birds on their return migrations. A heronry at the far end of the lake is also worth a visit to enjoy the fascinating behaviours of these special birds.
We will walk approximately 4-5 miles on flat terrain at a gentle pace over the course of the day to take in the different habitats and wildlife spectacles. Entry is free to the reserve and there is no parking charge.
- Enjoy the sights and sounds of the large tern colony and their chicks, including Little, Arctic and Sandwich Terns - Roseate Terns are also a possibility
- Look out to sea for terns fishing on the incoming tide and waders roosting at high tide
- Limestone flowers including Northern Marsh, Bee and Twayblade Orchids
- Chance of Grayling and Small Blue Butterflies

Tour Leader: Caroline Godden
Caroline has been a keen naturalist for over 15 years, with wide-ranging interests that include butterflies, moths, birds and vascular plants. Her ever-growing passion for nature resulted in a career change, having worked as an ecologist since 2020 and now specialising in freshwater ecology. Caroline has also travelled widely within the UK, Europe and North America to see a wide range of special places and wildlife – her highlight to date was watching a Great Grey Owl hunting just metres away. Caroline can usually be found out and about enjoying the local wildlife around Morecambe Bay where she lives with her husband and pet guinea pigs, and also organises and leads wildlife events for a wide range of audiences. She is especially passionate about proving that not all moths are brown and boring!
