Martin was a very informative guide, explaining historical and geographical features of the area as we set off on our Naturetrek circular walk. We saw 50 birds, some of which were first time spots for us. The pace was just right and a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Summary
Alresford is an attractive Georgian market town nestling in the South Downs to the east of Winchester and situated on the River Arle, a chalk-fed river which is a major tributary of the River Itchen. Led by ornithologist Martin Pitt, we will follow a circular path taking in the river valley, old watercress beds, downland and Alresford Pond itself in this picturesque landscape, looking for birds that make this their winter home. The downs will be attracting winter thrushes, Yellowhammers and flocks of other farmland species. The watercress beds are known wintering sites for Green Sandpiper and Water Pipit, whilst the pond and river attract wildfowl, Water Rail and even roosting harriers, both Marsh and Hen having been found in the past. Should time permit we will relocate to Cheesefoot Head, at the head of the South Downs, a short drive of 6 miles, to search for more open downland birds that may include Corn Bunting and Short-eared Owl. Expect to walk around 6 miles during the day.
- Look for wintering Green Sandpiper and Water Pipit around the watercress beds
- Wildfowl on Alresford Pond which can also hold the odd surprise
- Feel the breeze on your face up at Cheesefoot Head with winter finch flocks possible on our afternoon walk
- Crystal clear chalkstream water offers fish-spotting with Grayling, Brown Trout, Pike and Perch possible
