It was a really interesting and enjoyable experience. I learned a lot about the local area and the wildlife and plants of the area. The leader and co-leader were very knowledgeable and oozed enthusiasm about what we were looking at.

Summary
A fascinating and colourful world exists on the seashore and we will explore this at Kimmeridge Bay on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. This sheltered bay has many natural limestone ledges which make it easy to view life on the shore and in the shallow waters; it is the classic location for rockpooling. There are only gentle currents and small tides here so we can explore the extensive shoreline quite easily. As the tide drops in the afternoon we will look at the successive zones and the plants and animals that live there, and in the clear water we should be able to find several species of sea anemones, worms, crabs, molluscs, fish and colourful seaweeds.
We will examine some of the creatures we find in shallow trays and buckets and then return them safely to the water. There will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs. There is no need to bring any equipment for this visit but be prepared to paddle (wellies, jelly shoes or similar essential)! Leader Andrew Cleave is the co-author of the Collins Complete Guide to British Coastal Wildlife ISBN 978-0-00-741385-0.
- Look for a variety of seaweeds, molluscs, worms and crabs
- Fish could include gobies and lumpfish
- Explore and interpret the strand (wash) line higher up the beach
