We enjoyed a wonderful day out with Mike Langman exploring marshland and coast in the morning (birds, butterflies, dragonflies, lizards and beautiful country) and a long boat trip in the afternoon out to sea and along the lovely river Dart in the afternoon. Mike was a very good guide and we learned so much from his informative comments. Interesting also to learn of his reputation as an artist and illustrator, his illustrations now superseding the bird charts painted by my father all those years ago. In summary a great day and one which we thoroughly recommend, we will be back for more.

Summary
During this superb day of wildlife-watching with local expert, Mike Langman, we will enjoy a specially chartered cruise on the Dart and land-based natural history at Man Sands marsh and beach.
The day will begin by visiting the excellent National Trust Reserve of Man Sands. This small wetland reserve holds wintering wildfowl, Water Rail, Cetti's, Chiffchaff and sometimes Firecrest. At sea there are regularly Gannets, Kittiwakes, divers and grebes. Cirl Bunting, Yellowhammer and Skylark breed in the surrounding pastural fields.
After a picnic lunch we’ll take a short drive to Kingswear for a specially chartered 3.5-hour cruise on the Dart. If sea conditions allow we’ll head out of the estuary to the Mew Stone Rock and its breeding seabirds, then back up river past the scenic towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear, passing the Britannia Royal Naval College, Agatha Christie's Greenway summer home and the village of Dittisham. Of course we’ll be continually scanning for exciting wildlife along the way. Species en route should include breeding seabirds: Shag, Cormorant, gulls, Fulmar and even Peregrine. In the estuary waders such as Curlew, Redshank, Oystercatcher and perhaps a Mediterranean Gull amongst the more local gull species. There will be plenty of splendid Shelduck, Grey Heron, Little Egret and, with luck Kingfisher. Both Grey Seal and the much rarer (in the south-west) Harbour Seal are usually hauled out on pontoons or rocks.
Other key species regularly seen include Buzzard, Raven, Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise.
This Day Trip is often carefully planned to be able to run back-to-back with our Berry Head and Tor Bay by Boat (Day Trip) on Fridays.
The day will start at 9am.
IMPORTANT: Please note that all boat trips are subject to cancellation with notice as little as 24 hours if weather conditions are considered to be adverse by the Skipper. We recommend not making any non-refundable booking arrangements around the trip.
- Enjoy a special chartered cruise on the River Dart also heading a little way out to sea
- In spring & summer we may enjoy breeding seabirds including Shag, Fulmar and Kittiwake
- Guillemots, Razorbills and passing Manx Shearwater with Puffin a possibility in spring & summer
- Throughout the year we expect to find Cirl Bunting
- In winter Great Northern Divers and Black Redstarts may be found
- A good chance of Harbour Porpoise and Common Dolphin
- Other mammals may include Grey and Harbour Seal
- Expert local knowledge of naturalist Mike Langman
Spring and Summer:
The day will start by visiting the excellent National Trust Reserve of Man Sands. This small wetland reserve holds passing and breeding wildfowl, Water Rail, Cetti's and Reed Warbler, Chiffchaff and sometimes Firecrest. There is a small population of Wall Lizards which can be found basking out on sunny days. Cirl Bunting, Yellowhammer and Skylark breed in the surrounding pastoral fields.
After a picnic lunch, we’ll take a short drive to Kingswear for a specially chartered 3.5-hour cruise on the River Dart. If sea conditions allow, we’ll head out of the estuary to the Mew Stone Rock offshore with its breeding seabirds, then back upriver past the scenic towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear, passing the Britannia Royal Naval College, Agatha Christie's Greenway summer home and the village of Dittisham. Of course, we’ll be continually scanning for exciting wildlife along the way. Species en route should include breeding seabirds including Shag, Cormorant, gulls, Fulmar and Kittiwake with Peregrine breeding too. Guillemots and Razorbills will usually be feeding around us with passing Manx Shearwater and Gannet, while Puffin is also a distinct possibility. We also have a good chance of finding Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise with Bottlenose Dolphin occasionally encountered too and even Bluefin Tuna! In the estuary waders such as Curlew, Whimbrel, Redshank, Oystercatcher and in early summer perhaps a Mediterranean Gull amongst the more local gull species. There will be plenty of splendid Shelduck, Grey Heron, Little Egret and with luck Kingfisher or perhaps a passage Osprey stopping off on the estuary to feed. Both Grey Seal and the much rarer (in the south-west) Harbour Seal are usually hauled out on pontoons or rocks.
Autumn and Winter
This area holds a superb array of wintering wildlife that seeks shelter in the estuary and calm bays. Depending on the tide times we will take a chartered 2.5-hour cruise in the morning or afternoon which will take us past the scenic towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear, and on past Agatha Christie's Greenway summer home and the village of Dittisham, with us scanning for exciting wildlife along the way. Species should include such estuary waders as Curlew, Redshank, Oystercatcher and perhaps even a Mediterranean Gull. There will be plenty of splendid Shelduck and, with luck, small numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers, Kingfisher and Little Egrets. Both Grey Seal and the much rarer (in the south-west) Harbour Seal regularly haul out on pontoons or rocks. Peregrine Falcon, Buzzard, Raven, Common Scoter and Gannet are all possible. Wintering Great Northern Divers and Black Redstarts were a feature of last year’s tours and we have a good chance of finding Harbour Porpoise and Common Dolphin as we head out of the estuary into open water. Following the cruise, after a short drive, the rest of the day will be spent visiting the excellent National Trust Reserve of Man Sands. This small wetland reserve holds wintering wildfowl, Water Rail, Snipe, Cetti's Warbler and regular wintering Chiffchaff and Firecrest. Both Cirl Bunting and Yellowhammer feed in the surrounding pastoral fields.

We took this one day trip to Mansands and the River Dart after the monotony of the second lockdown. Mike Langman was an excellent leader and knew the area well. The day was made by the exceptional weather for early December. Sunny, mild and very little wind for most of the time. The arrangements with Sean the boat skipper went well. We had some good bird sightings as well as breaching dolphins. The organisations was good and adherence to Covid protocols excellent.

It is amazing just how many birds can be seen on a very cold but sunny day in South Devon. Small birds included Firecrest and Goldcrest, Cirl Bunting and Chiffchaff; also large birds such as Buzzard and a Peregrine Falcon. And during the cruise on the River Dart we were spoiled for choice; Grey Herons, Egrets, Oystercatchers, Redshank and many more, and a grey seal loitering on a pontoon. But the prize of the day goes to the Great Northern Diver which was happy to entertain us for 10 minutes or more. Our tour leader was excellent in giving us tips on how to distinguish between similar birds by sight and sound. And being a local to the area he also gave us some history about places that we visited both on foot and on the river trip.
