Oliver, the leader, was incredibly knowledgeable, with the most amazing ear. He could hear, recognise and work out the source, of all the birds we had hoped to see. There was just the one that eluded us - we heard it, over and over - and that was the cuckoo. Naturetrek guides never lose sight of the fact that this needs to be fun too. People have wildly varied knowledge to start with, and it was suitable for all of us. Those who have more knowledge always seem happy to share. I have done many holidays with Naturetrek. They combine superb access to wildlife with a good holiday experience.

Summary
Nestled along the Somerset coast, the Exmoor National Park and Holnicote Estate contain a diverse mix of habitats and wealth of wildlife species. The stunning oak woodlands of Horner Wood will conjure many spring migrant birds including Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, Cuckoo and Tree Pipit. We will start our day here, wandering along streams that hold Dipper and Grey Wagtail and listening to the sounds of so many resident birds at this time of year. Our ascent into the deciduous woodland is fairly steep but easy going and our focus will be spotting the many woodland butterflies and picking out the different bird songs.
As the woodland levels off we’ll take our time to focus on the magical migrants flitting through the canopy or visiting nesting sites. We’ll navigate to more open ground at Halse Combe to gain fantastic views over the Bristol Channel and spend some time looking for reptiles and butterflies including the localised Heath Fritillary which will hopefully be found laying eggs on Common Cow-wheat.
We will complete our loop and have lunch before relocating by a short drive to Dunkery Beacon. Here we will explore the heather moorland habitat where we will hopefully find Whinchat, Redpoll and possibly some birds of prey. In preference to walking to the beacon we may follow the woodland edge where we will encounter more species and complete our day in late afternoon.
For trips during the summer there will be lots of other things to look for including butterflies, dragonflies, some early migrant species and of course young of the breeding birds with any luck.
There will be approximately 8 miles of walking, sometimes across rough, steep tracks.
- Migrant oak woodland specialist birds including Redstart, Pied Flycatcher & Wood Warbler
- Exploring heather moorland for Red Deer, Whinchat, Cuckoo & raptors
- Searching open areas for butterflies and reptiles
- Panoramic views over west Somerset and the Bristol Channel

Exploring new territory on a local wildlife area not travelled before. Excellent time of year just before bursting of the leaf but soon after arrival of bird migrants. Naturetrek's guide Oliver, is full of knowledge, has keen hearing and eyes so necessary for birding. Oliver has tenacity and a sound knowledge of all aspects of wildlife along with a congenial nature.

Tour Leader: Oliver Smart
Following a childhood fascination with the natural world, Oliver went on to study ornithology at the University of Birmingham during his mid-twenties. Alongside an emerging interest in photography, learning the art of bird ringing and volunteering for the Avon Wildlife Trust, BTO and RSPB, Oliver has put time to good use. His main passion is birds and through photography he has built a diverse collection of imagery, which is represented by both RSPB Images and Alamy. Combined with a desire to travel, Oliver has explored many parts of the world; his favourite destinations usually including a seabird colony or two, where the sight, sound, smell and opportunities for a photographer are second to none. His claim to fame to date though is an image he took in the Seychelles which has been used on a bank note!
