For a relatively small country, Wales offers an impressive diversity of habitats and wildlife. Its wild Atlantic coastline, offshore islands, wooded valleys, wetlands, estuaries and rugged uplands provide rewarding wildlife-watching throughout the year.
In spring and early summer, the oakwoods of North Wales come alive with birds such as Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler and Redstart, while the uplands support Ring Ouzel and Whinchat. Along the coast, Choughs patrol dramatic headlands and huge colonies of seabirds gather to breed. Pembrokeshire is particularly spectacular at this time of year, with Skomer hosting hundreds of thousands of seabirds, including Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills and Manx Shearwaters. The surrounding waters offer opportunities to see Grey Seals, Harbour Porpoises and dolphins, while the mainland’s wild flowers, butterflies and dragonflies add further interest.
Winter brings a different spectacle, as estuaries fill with thousands of waders and wildfowl, while North Wales offers the chance to search for Black Grouse, Greenland White-fronted Geese and other seasonal specialities. With magnificent scenery as a backdrop, Wales is a superb destination for a wildlife holiday at any time of year.
