Our August ‘Whales & Dolphins of the Azores’ holiday was once again a great success with 8 species of cetacean recorded with excellent encounters and good numbers of animals seen. We hope these images of a Sperm Whale dive sequence, sent by tour leader James Phillips, will give you a taste of the trip
Sperm Whale diving, Azores by James Phillips
The trip recorded a total of 22 Sperm Whales (with 2 calves), 5 Short-finned Pilot Whales, 35 False Killer Whales, 53+ Bottlenose Dolphins (with calves), 25-35 Risso’s Dolphins, 50 Striped Dolphins (with calves), 230+ Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (groups with many calves), 35+ Short-beaked Common Dolphins (with calves), a Loggerhead Turtle, a Blue shark, Atlantic Flying Fish, 5 Roseate Terns, 400+ Cory’s and 4 Great Shearwaters. The Azores is arguably the best whale watching destination anywhere in Europe right now ... and it’s worth bearing in mind that the above were all seen on just 6 scheduled 3-4 hour boat trips!
