It was wonderful seeing sea eagles, golden eagles and otters. Seeing the beauty of the island and stunning colours in October, often going off beaten tracks to find hidden gems at the end. Revisiting Iona, such a beautiful, peaceful place. The friendliness of the group and our leader, made the holiday very enjoyable, it felt like I was with old friends. Both Mark Wood (2 days) and Neil McMahon (5 days) were extremely knowledgeable about the island and their knowledge of birds and their identification was excellent. Neil was a great leader, very friendly and helpful and drove us safely round the island for 5 days, managing to produce so much of interest to see each day. Comfortable bedrooms and bed. Excellent food and friendly helpful staff.

The highlight was seeing golden eagles and white-tailed eagles and otters. The scenery was just spectacular. I enjoy small group tours as it is easier to exit the bus, use the leader’s scope and get to know others. Neil was personable, highly knowledgeable and a great spotter. He could also talk about breeding habits, habitat, and lifestyles of birds and otters. He showed great patience in ensuring that all clients could see and identify various species both through their own optics and through his scope. He took clients’ interests into account, particularly raptors and otters and a highlight was seeing porpoises from the ferry home. He had excellent knowledge of Mull and where various species were likely to be seen.

Think of Western Scotland in Autumn, and several images come to mind. Those images might include gales and rain - and we had our share of those, with a named storm and the remains of a hurricane from the other side of the Atlantic - but we were having such a good time that after one sudden drenching, everyone in the small party was laughing. Those images should also include deer, Golden Eagles, White-tailed Eagles and otters: we had plenty of those, and many other creatures as well like V-shaped flocks of migrating Whooper Swans, Dippers and lots of divers, ducks and geese. We also had sun on the heather-clad hillsides, and combining sun, showers and wonderful scenery gave us spectacular rainbows.

Flight-free Wildlife Holidays
At Naturetrek we make full use of the Eurostar rail service through the channel tunnel, and of the ferry routes between England’s south coast and France and Spain, to offer a range of ‘flightless’ wildlife holidays in Belgium, Holland, France and Spain. In addition, we also offer the widest selection of wildlife holidays within the UK, none of which require a flight to participate in. Therefore, if you prefer not to fly, for whatever reason, we have a range of varied and exciting wildlife holidays for you to choose from, and we are committed to regularly adding more.
It is also the case that many of our other holidays within Europe are also accessible by rail. Generally, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and we’d be pleased to offer advice to anybody who wishes to join any of our tours within Europe by a means other than flying!
