Paraguay - From the Gran Chaco to the Atlantic Forest

Paraguay remains one of South America's most overlooked wildlife destinations, yet for the adventurous naturalist it offers an extraordinary diversity of birds, mammals and habitats. From the vast thorn forests and saline lagoons of the Gran Chaco to the lush Atlantic Forests of the east, the country supports an impressive array of regional specialities and sought-after species. Combined with relatively few visitors, excellent local guides and a genuine sense of exploration, Paraguay provides a rewarding opportunity to experience some of the continent's lesser-known wildlife hotspots.

Our journey begins in the remarkable Gran Chaco, a huge wilderness of dry woodland, palm savannah and seasonal wetlands that supports a wealth of Chaco endemics. Here we will search for species such as Black-legged Seriema, Crested Gallito, Spot-winged Falconet, Quebracho Crested Tinamou and Many-coloured Chaco Finch, whilst the region's wetlands attract flamingoes, swans, grebes and a host of other waterbirds. Mammal-watching can be equally rewarding, with possibilities including Chacoan Peccary, Chaco Mara, Capybara and, with luck, Giant Anteater or even Jaguar.

We then travel south to the forests, wetlands and grasslands around Vista Alegre, where a fascinating mix of Atlantic Forest and open-country species awaits. From colourful parrots, tanagers and hummingbirds to wetland birds such as Maguari Stork and Ash-throated Crake, the region provides an excellent contrast to the Chaco. The final stage of the tour takes us through the wildlife-rich forests of Misiones Province and to the magnificent Iguazú Falls, one of the world's great natural wonders. Here we will explore some of the finest remaining Atlantic Forest in South America, searching for species such as Red-breasted Toucan, White-bearded Antshrike, Black-fronted Piping Guan and Surucua Trogon, whilst enjoying the spectacular scenery of the falls themselves.

For those wishing to extend their stay, an optional extension to the superb Mbaracayú Forest Reserve offers the opportunity to explore one of Paraguay's most important remaining tracts of Atlantic Forest. Highlights here may include the astonishing Bare-throated Bellbird, the spectacular White-bearded Manakin, and the highly localised White-winged Nightjar, one of South America's most sought-after birds. Together, the main tour and extension provide a wonderful introduction to the wildlife, landscapes and birdlife of one of the least-explored countries on the continent.
