Seeing and hearing the thousands of Cranes leaving and coming into roost is a unique experience. A Weasel spotted before breakfast, a young Fire Salamander under a log and a White-Tailed Eagles on the ground are other worthy mentions.

Summary
This holiday is timed to provide a very special ornithological experience amid the delightful rural setting of northern France’s Champagne country. Firstly, we head to Sainte-Marie-du-Lac-Nuisement for a 3-night stay alongside Lac du Der. By the time of our visit, many thousands of Common Cranes will have already arrived at this vast lake, in France’s Champagne region, to rest and feed before continuing their migration south. Our main focus will be on watching the Cranes during the day and as they fly to roost in the early evening. However, we’ll also find time to look for raptors such as Merlin, Marsh Harrier and the majestic White-tailed Eagle, as well as Black-necked Grebe bobbing on the open water and flocks of Tundra Bean Geese grazing in waterside fields. Next we transfer to Mesnil-Saint-Père, where we stay the next three nights alongside the largest of three lakes within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d’Orient. Among the birdlife we’ll be hoping to see large numbers of wildfowl and waders and in the extensive woodlands, up to six species of woodpecker, as well as Crested Tit and Hawfinch. We will take advantage of being located in France’s Champagne region to do a tasting at the Champagne Drappier vineyard, hosted by proprietor Michel Drappier, and enjoy a tour of the cellars and winery. We will also visit the beautiful town of Troyes, where we’ll have a guided tour of its historic centre.
- Travel via Eurostar from London St. Pancras to Paris and then by local train to Troyes
- Visit Lac du Temple & Lac d’Orient within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d’Orient
- 6 species of woodpecker, Hawfinch, Firecrest & Short-toed Treecreeper in Forêt d’Orient
- See the huge congregations of Cranes at Lac du Der, with up to 50,000 coming to roost!
- Tour of the Champagne Drappier vineyard & champagne tasting included
- White-tailed Eagle, Red Kite & Hen Harrier near Lac du Der
- Sightseeing in historic Troyes with a local historian
- Free use of the hotel spa in Mesnil-Saint-Père
- Led by expert naturalist guides

Grade A. Easy walks only.
This holiday is timed to provide a very special ornithological experience amid the gentle rural setting of northern France’s Champagne country. Firstly, we head to Sainte-Marie-du-Lac-Nuisement for a 3-night stay alongside Lac du Der — the largest artificial lake in France, built on the River Marne it holds back water preventing Paris from flooding, which lies a little more than 100 miles to the west. For the remaining three nights of the holiday, we drive the hour to Mesnil-Saint-Père in the southwest of the region alongside Lac d’Orient within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d’Orient. As well as a detailed look at the lakes, we will also explore this immense forest where several reserves have seen little or no human intervention for decades and have become a paradise for many species of woodland plants and animals.
After travelling on the Eurostar service direct from London St. Pancras to Paris we then take a local train to Troyes, from where we will transfer by minibus to La Bocagère, a comfortable family-run hotel in Mesnil St-Père, our base for the first three nights of the tour. From here we will explore the Lac du Der and the smaller and less well-known Etang de la Horre, looking in particular for Common Cranes. Twice every year more than 150,000 Common Cranes pass through the area on their journeys between breeding grounds in northern Europe and wintering sites in southern France and Spain. In November, vast numbers arrive at much the same time and pause here to rest and feed before continuing their journey. We should observe many hundreds, perhaps thousands, feeding in the nearby fields during the day, and even more coming to roost in the late afternoon, filling the air with their evocative trumpeting calls. As many as 100,000 Cranes have been estimated at the roost, making this one of Western Europe’s most spectacular assemblages of birds.
The lakes and meadows attract a wide variety of other species. Birds of prey are varied and plentiful, the most interesting being White-tailed Eagle. This is their only regular wintering site in France, attracting a minimum of two or three birds every year. Other regularly recorded raptors include Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin, and both Marsh and Hen Harrier. Waterfowl are plentiful on the lakes and of particular interest will be parties of Goosander, with lesser numbers of Black-necked Grebe bobbing on the open water and flocks of Tundra Bean Geese grazing in waterside fields.
Moving on, we spend the next three nights at the Auberge du Lac in Mesnil-Saint-Père, from here we will make the most of our time spent around the vast woodland area of the Forêt d’Orient; several areas within this forest have been set aside as reserves. Six species of woodpecker are resident and the deciduous trees will have dropped their leaves making it easier to spot members of this popular family of birds. During our time in the forest we will hope to find the impressive Black Woodpecker, plus Middle Spotted Woodpecker, its smaller cousin, and a variety of other bird species including Short-toed Treecreeper, Firecrest, Hawfinch and if we’re lucky, the elusive Goshawk. The lakes also hold an exciting array of waterfowl and in a good year Bewick’s Swans, Red-necked Grebe, Great Northern and Red-throated Diver make the tour list, with White Stork also regular in recent years. A typical day sees us return to our accommodation in the late afternoon, giving time to enjoy the hotel’s excellent spa facilities before dinner.
Whilst here, we will keenly anticipate a visit to Champagne Drappier, a friendly, family-run champagne producer located in the Côte des Bar. Renowned for organic and natural methods of cultivation and production, the Drappier champagnes have rich, coppery-gold hues, expansive aromas and a fine, subtle effervescence. Oozing with charm and good humour, proprietor Michel Drappier takes great care and pride in welcoming visitors to his domain. The visit starts in the magnificent 12th century vaulted cellars, originally built by Cistercian monks. We then continue to the winery where we will see the grape press, huge fermentation vats and the wooden ageing barrels as well as the disgorging and labelling lines. The visit will be rounded off with a tasting of several of the Drappier cuvées.
We will take the opportunity to visit exquisite Troyes, with its historic centre of half-timbered houses and beautiful squares. Situated on the River Seine, the city was the capital of the ancient Province of Champagne in the 12th and 13th centuries and great trading fairs took place here. The prosperity of the city has left a very rich heritage, including 10 churches with exceptional stained glass windows, fine Renaissance statuary and some notable museums. A guided tour will provide a fascinating insight.
As we leave France after this memorable taste of two very contrasting bird habitats deep within Champagne country, we may choose to toast the thousands of roosting Cranes as they bid us adieu from the fields of winter stubble.

I enjoyed spending time with fellow like-minder nature lovers and learning how they spend their lives and what they have done. Jason is a superb guide. Extremely knowledgeable and sharp-eyed and also immensely likeable and empathetic to the requirements of the different clients on the holiday. He is a fantastic people-person. Emilie is so nice and complements him beautifully and together they make a great team.

The birds were amazing but so was all the other things we saw and the beauty of the lakes was breath taking. In the afternoon sun, the contrasts of the terrain, colours and shadows was just magical. I really enjoyed the addition of a guided tour around Troyes and as well as the Champagne producers. Jason and Emily are a good team, they complemented each other perfectly. I liked the way they also included members of the group and encouraged them to share their knowledge. They did there utmost to show us the region and always went the extra mile ( literally and metaphorically) in the hopes of seeing more and getting a new experience.

The Naturetrek office staff were very helpful in arranging my return travel home after staying on in France to visit family. First hotel was excellent - second one less good as my room was quite dated. Food was exceptional at the first hotel and still very good at the second one. Both hotels were ideally located for exploring the area with very little travelling involved each day. Plenty of quality birding in different habitats with vast numbers of birds and I also enjoyed the additional tour content with the walking tour of Troyes and the champagne visit and tasting, plus visiting some of the village churches, all of which gave me a good feel for the area as well as the wildlife. The pace was relaxed and we never felt rushed. Both Jason and Emilie were superb - excellent naturalists but also very efficient and good at organising things, including delicious picnic lunches, and creating a nice atmosphere within the group - we all had a lot of fun. Jason could not have been more helpful in sorting out my onward travel to Dijon to stay with my sister after the holiday when my original plans fell through and I was extremely grateful for his assistance in what was a very difficult and stressful situation. Their knowledge of reptiles, plants, fungi etc was a real bonus and added considerably to my enjoyment of the tour. The highlight had to be watching and hearing the cranes coming into roost at sunset which was magical! I also enjoyed seeing the salamander and the good views of the middle spotted woodpecker which was a new bird for me. The champagne tour and tasting were also very enjoyable. Another very enjoyable holiday with Naturetrek!

I love France anyway and had spend the year 1996 in Nantes, so it's always a delight to be back there. I enjoyed seeing all the Common Cranes flying in over the Lac du Der Chantecoq and hearing the trumpeting/bugling calls of the adults and the whiffles of the younger birds. An incredible feeding frenzy of Cormorants when a fishing boat appeared, while waves of Common Cranes continued to fly overhead. Wonderfully close views of the numerous Great White Egrets, especially from the hides where they could be observed just feet away. White Storks were quite numerous, and then there were all the ducks (pochard, redhead pochard, widgeon, teal .....), waders and often good views of Kingfisher. Black Woodpecker eluded us, even though our guide tried his best and could only come up with a larger than life poster of one in a forest. We had a super & prolonged view of a Middle Spotted Woodpecker while we were having our picnic lunch in the village of Lentilles; although they were heard often throughout the trip. A Green Woodpecker was a first for me as I don't think we get them in Scotland. Our guide was such good fun, very relaxed, yet so knowledgeable and organised. Excellent trip leader, and he coped well when I left my binocular case at Mesnil St-Pere; contacting both the auberge and Naturetrek while keeping me updated. He went out of his way to show us things and to share the vast amount of information he has gained about the Champagne region. Nice guy; good French and a wealth of knowledge. Over the years I have always found Naturetrek to be a very professional and extremely diligent and helpful tour operator. Their pre-departure information is excellent, as well as their curiosity as to how their tours could be improved; I've found the Naturetrek people to be very open minded. Obviously, each guide has their own personality, but without exception all have been incredibly knowledgeable in their field of expertise and eagerly imparted their knowledge and enthusiasm to their clients.

[This] trip was all I had hoped for: thousands of cranes flying in formation across ice-blue skies, woodpeckers calling in the forests, water birds in plenty on the lakes and on our "day off" from birding a visit to Champagne Drappier, nestling in beautiful countryside, where we were entertained royally and tasted some excellent cuvees (General de Gaulle was a customer and we followed in his footsteps!). The expert knowledge of our naturalist guides Gerald and Simon was impressive and they transported us to the best birding spots, so that our 'tick list' was full of birds seen and heard by the end of the trip. We stayed in three very comfortable hotels. The meals in the first of the three were of truly Michelin standard, earnng the chef a spontaneous round of applause from all of us! On our final day in Troyes we enjoyed a mornng tour of this photogenic and atmospheric city by a qualified local guide, whose accent was endearingly reminiscent of Catherine de Valois in Shakespeare's Henry V! Some of us chose to go back to the forest, less than an hour's drive from Troyes, in the afternoon for more birding, which was made possible by our guide Gerald giving up his free time to take us there. We were rewarded by great sightings of a pair of black woodpeckers, which had been playing 'hard to get' on previous days! Our transit through Gare du Nord on the way home passed - thankfully - without incident and we arrived in St Pancras on time. I can thoroughly recommend this trip to a part of France I had never been to before and which has so much to offer.

It was a week in France watching migrating cranes and enjoying the delights of champagne production. The guides were excellent and extremely professional and knowledgeable which added so much to the overall experience. We were able to see cranes calling and flying as well as resting in fields to take on food for the next stage of their journey. A truly magical experience to see such wonderful , prehistoric birds flying in group formations. The forests of the area also offered the chance to see many woodland birds. We spotted 5 different types of woodpecker, including the shy but spectacularly coloured black with its red crown.

Tour Leader: Jason Mitchell
Jason was born and raised in Devon where, from an early age, he developed a passion for birds and other wildlife, most notably dragonflies and butterflies. From his earliest volunteering experience on the Exe Estuary he dreamt of working in nature conservation and after returning to education in his mid-twenties, graduated from Plymouth University and started work for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds on the Pebblebed Heaths in east Devon. Since then he has also worked on various conservation projects for local government and the Wildlife Trust. In 2010 Jason returned to the RSPB as the North Kent Marshes Warden and latterly on the Blean Woods National Nature Reserve near Canterbury.
In June 2013, Jason moved to La Brenne in central France with his wife and young family in pursuit of a new challenge. La Brenne was an obvious choice; having visited the Loire Valley with his French wife over many years, he fell in love with the ‘Land of a Thousand Lakes’. Now well establish as a nature guide, he specialises in wildlife tours within France but also leads more widely across Europe, having lead his first wildlife tour to Italy for Naturetrek back in 2007.
