Lots of wonderful and interesting experiences. Cliff walks, spotting wading birds, boat trip, night walk on which we saw lots of blonde hedgehogs, exploring fortifications from when the island were invaded in WW2. Excellent guide who was very knowledgeable about the terrible conditions for slave labourers who built the fortifications in WW2, and could also identify an enormous number of different species of birds and insects.

- Town tour, museum visit & a little history (Roman, Victorian and WW2) included
- Led by expert resident naturalist guides

The Braye Beach is excellent, lovely rooms, good breakfast and dinner options, very comfortable and an excellent location for the beach and walk up to St Anne's. I loved the variety of things on the trip, so as well as birds, there were butterflies, moths and hedgehogs. John and Matt were outstanding. As well as both being extremely knowledgable (John knew everything about the wildlife as well as the history) they were very friendly and ensured we found what we were interested in, and answered all our questions. John has done an amazing job establishing the Alderney Bird Observatory and should be congratulated. I have never had such good views of Honey Buzzard or Whinchat before – to see them on migration and so close was excellent.

From the moment I booked the holiday to the return journey the whole experience was amazing. Everything was organised for me, I could not believe the beautiful hotel room I had with views of the bay. Our tour leaders were so knowledgeable and helpful, and made the holiday exciting and interesting. The island itself was heaven, with fantastic bird life, flowers and insects. A wonderful place to go on holiday, especially when organised by Naturetrek. Naturetrek are so professional and efficient, this is the third holiday I have taken with them. They are lovely helpful people, nothing is too much trouble. The holiday was exactly as they described, in fact better. Travelling alone I feel safe in the knowledge that Naturetrek have sorted everything and I am travelling with a well-known, superb, professional company.
D.W. Devon, June 22 -
Alderney is really a small island - less than 3 sq Kim’s I think! Leaders were able to give a very varied tour, including much information on both the natural history and history of the island. The ability to identify a very wide variety of birds, butterflies and especially flowers was impressive, and the leaders were able to alter and adapt the tour according to the conditions at short notice.
J.G. West Sussex, May 22 -
Unbeatable experiences included watching bird ringing, particularly the swallows from their roost. I enjoyed the tour flexibility so that we could take advantage of weather and bird/wildlife/plant sightings. This tour in particular enabled us to meet local people such as the hedgehog specialist and the bird observatory board member who invited us for coffee in her garden while we looked at the moth trap findings there. John and Matt were constantly looking out for interesting things and encouraged great respect for the animals and plants. John was able to tell us a lot about the history of the island, an added bonus. They made us feel part of their "family" of friends and partners. Very special indeed.
C.T, West Sussex, May 2022 -
John and Matt were both incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, helpful, keen to discuss and impart their knowledge in a very inclusive way. The incredible wide-ranging knowledge of John Horton meant we covered all aspects of the wildlife and history of Alderney.
J.F. Buckinghamshire, September 2021 -
Very relaxed schedule that provided interest for all those in the group. Because the island is so small getting anywhere was quick and easy. The two leaders were very knowledgeable and both had a delightful and very easy manner. Braye Beach Hotel excellent.
G.H. London, September 2021 -
I have thoroughly enjoyed this holiday. I felt we had really got away from home, but it wasn't too far to travel. I enjoyed the mix of subjects with the expertise of the guides. John and Annabel were brilliant, and they were keen to make sure everyone saw what was being looked at.

We enjoyed our week on Alderney very much. We thought the guided walks with John and Annabel were excellent. Our morning watching the bird ringing and the examination of the moth trap were the wildlife highlights for me.

The majority of our wildlife tours focus primarily on birds, allowing us to offer a huge choice of bird holidays. On most of our birdwatching tours we aim to see a wide variety of species, while taking time to enjoy other wildlife as well as cultural highlights and architecture.
Naturetrek Birdwatching Tours
We have one of the largest selections of professionally organised, small group birdwatching holidays around the world and all of our birdwatching tours are accompanied by at least one professional ornithologist leader with detailed knowledge of the area.
The majority of our bird tours have a relaxed, flexible approach which allows more time for photography, detailed wildlife exploration, leisure time and the region’s people, culture, history and architecture, while allowing the group to see a wide range of bird species.
Here is a small selection of our many bird holidays:
- Southern Morocco – an exploration of the birdlife in Morocco’s southern deserts, oases and mountains
- The Camargue in Spring – a short break to enjoy the spring birds of the Rhône Delta and Camargue wetland

Relaxed Wildlife Holidays
Our programme of Go Slow wildlife holidays allows guests to enjoy the natural world at a more leisurely pace than on one of our conventional wildlife holidays. Our Go Slow tours range from week-long holidays that offer warm spring sunshine and gentle natural history excursions in Portugal, the Camargue and Mallorca, to tours which take on a more cultural air each afternoon, such as Go Slow … in Istria in Autumn and Go Slow … in Southern Spain. Our Go Slow holidays in the Swiss Alps and Cyprus both combine the best of the region’s botany and birdlife, or, if you would like to travel a little further afield, why not join us for a leisurely-paced exploration of India’s Tiger Country, Kenya’s Masai Mara, or South Africa’s Western Cape?
