Summary
Laikipia is located in central Kenya, approximately 100 miles to the north of Nairobi, and is roughly half the size of Wales. Its high, open plains were once primarily large ranches and farmland but have now been transformed into a mosaic of livestock grazing and managed conservancy areas, which are home to some of Kenya’s more unusual wildlife, including African Wild Dog, a small number of melanistic Leopards, Cheetah, Black and White Rhino, Serval, bustards and nightjars. The diversity of wildlife here is second only to the Maasai Mara, but with a very different landscape. It is less visited than the more famous Mara, so it is not as busy and has a more relaxed feel to it.
- Stay at the world-famous Laikipia Wilderness Camp and search for African Wild Dogs & melanistic Leopards
- Explore Aberdare National Park
- Possibility of Black & White Rhino at Ol Pejeta
- Abundant birdlife (over 1,000 species recorded in Kenya!)
- Lion, Cheetah, Serval & Leopard all possible
- Stunning scenery of Laikipia County
Grading
Grade A - this is a traditional African safari, and therefore suitable for anyone of any age, without any great necessity for extreme fitness. Our birdwatching and mammal-viewing will be through a mixture of driving and gentle walks. You should, however, be prepared for some road journeys of three to four hours in length. Roads and tracks can be rough in places.
