In glorious sunshine we enjoyed exploring the beautiful Northumbrian coastline on a one day trip. We spotted 47 bird species and enjoyed cormorant, shag, gull and tern masterclasses. Naturetrek let the trip run for just the 2 of us so we had an expert and friendly guide to ourselves for the whole day. What a privilege. Can't praise them too highly. Naturetrek deliver absolutely outstanding customer service above and beyond anything we have ever met with any other travel company. The back office have a real passion for nature too and want to share this with all their customers, and the tour leaders are highly regarded naturalists with a real human touch. WOW!!!!!

Summary
The Northumberland coast has some of the most attractive scenery in Britain – and some of the best birding too. In spring and autumn, migrants can pop up almost anywhere and often do! In late spring and summer birds are going about their business feeding their hungry chicks. On the coastal footpath Linnets, warblers, buntings and finches appear and disappear into the tangle of gorse and hawthorn bushes. Out to sea terns plunge into the water in search of sand eels, Auks dive for the same reason and Fulmars skim across the sea or cackle from low cliff nesting sites. The whole coast bustles with activity. This day involves short coastal walks and drives, as we move from small village to small village down the Northumberland coast.
Our walks will mostly be over flat ground, covering around 6 miles or so. Please look at the detailed information below to read about the seasonal highlights of this Day Trip in spring and summer.
- Walking along some of England’s most beautiful coastline
- Various seabirds – Fulmar, terns, Gannets and Auks
- Coastal migrants and residents including Sedge and Willow Warblers, Stonechats and Reed Buntings
- Search for Red-throated Diver, Eider Duck, Scoter and Red-breasted Merganser among the waves and waders on the muddy shores
- Explore the sand dune habitat in search of Linnet, Wheatear and Stonechat
Spring (March/April)
As spring unfolds, the Northumberland coast is a fantastic place to be. In early spring, waders are still present and can include scuttling Sanderling, dashing Dunlin and the evocative calling Curlew. Our lovely winter thrushes call from berry-depleted hedges and, with luck, we'll encounter an early spring Sandwich Tern, Wheatear or calling Chiff-Chaff. Out to sea we may see divers, seaduck and grebes as well as the striking white Gannets and the more sombrely dressed Cormorants and Shags. The shores and inland pools provide homes for numerous waders and in the sand dunes one can find Linnet, Reed Bunting, Meadow Pipit, Skylark and Stonechat.
Summer (June onwards)
Throughout the rest of the spring and into the summer months the stunning Northumberland coast bustles with activity, as breeding seabirds on the cliffs and islands constantly fly to and fro in search of food. Common, Arctic, Sandwich, Little and the rare Roseate Tern can all be found feeding offshore; Gannets from Bass Rock plunge into the sea and Cormorant, Puffin, Guillemot and Red-breasted Merganser bob up and down with the waves. Swallows and martins scoop up flies over the sand dunes and the songs of Sedge, Grasshopper and Willow Warblers are constant companions. From June we will also find Northumberland’s National Flower – Bloody Cranesbill. The coast is also well known for the unexpected with unusual, or downright rare, birds possible anywhere and at any time!
