Summary
Join cameraman and naturalist Jack Perks for a fascinating day focusing on one of nature’s most spectacular events, the Red Deer rut. Wollaton Hall is a 14th century stately home with 500 acres of land supporting 90 Red Deer and 120 Fallow Deer. In October, the rut begins with the stags and bucks, sporting their impressive antlers, roaring and bellowing and occasionally fighting for their opportunity to become the dominant male. With Jack, we hope to achieve close views of these impressive animals and hopefully some rutting. Wollaton is a fantastic place to learn deer photography as it’s home to so many animals in a very accessible setting. We will meet in the morning and head out to find the deer, being sure to keep a safe distance from the animals as we watch them. Jack will give hints and tips on their photography and as we will be keeping a respectful distance, a long lens is advised if you have one. As well as the deer there are plenty of interesting birds here to photograph with Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron and Jay just some of the species commonly seen.
Start time is 9am and we will aim to finish at 3pm.

Tour Leader: Jack Perks
Jack is a Nottinghamshire based professional underwater photographer and camera operator having worked for Springwatch, The One Show and presented on Countryfile. Jack has won awards in Underwater Photographer of the year and British wildlife photography awards for his work and has been teaching photography at both Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham for the last seven years.
Although Jack is passionate about all nature subjects, fish are certainly centre stage for him having written three books on them including 'Freshwater Fishes of Britain'. He’s also the first and only person to film every species of freshwater fish in Britain a project taking over seven years, traveling all over the UK, to complete. Jack has dived, swam and pond dipped in almost every corner of the British Isles looking for its aquatic wildlife.
In addition to this, Jack hosts the successful nature podcast 'The Bearded Tit’s Podcast' where he interviews wildlife presenters, camera ops and scientists about the work they do. Jack has guided and ran nature tours both abroad and in the UK, and looks forward to sharing his passion for little-known wildlife on Naturetrek tours.
