There were many highlights... Brown Bears, of course, plus pre-breakfast Chamois most mornings. Nest building Penduline Tits & Wallcreeper were birding highlights while Map & Large Copper were among the many exotic butterflies seen. Fire Salamander and a very handsome male Sand Lizard were other personal favourites. Lovely group of people, we all had a great old time.

Summary
We head to the forest-clad central Romanian province of Transylvania for this holiday, a region steeped in myth, folklore and superb wildlife. Based close to the Piatra Craiuli National Park amongst stunning scenery, rocky slopes dotted with Chamois and flower-filled meadows, we will make daily natural history excursions into the surrounding area. Wallcreeper and wheeling flocks of Alpine Swift may be among the birds recorded in the Zarnesti Gorge, while flowers such as Carpathian Bellflower and Alpine Lady’s Mantle will excite the keen botanists. Romania is home to Europe’s largest population of Brown Bear and we will spend time looking for the tracks of Wolf, Brown Bear and Lynx and then visit a hide in the evening to look for the animals themselves, with bears being seen regularly.
- 7 nights based in a small family run hotel in the Transylvanian Carpathian Mountains
- Watch Brown Bears from a hide in the forest
- A general wildlife holiday focusing on birds, mammals, butterflies & other wildlife
- Visit Castle Bran, alleged haunt of Vlad the Impaler (Count Dracula!)
- Beautiful mountain scenery
- Learn how to identify the tracks of Wolf, Bear, Lynx and other forest mammals
- Led by expert UK and local naturalists
Grading
Grade B. Easy to moderate day walks.
The Carpathian Mountains form a sweeping and majestic arc that rises in Slovakia and passes east along the Polish border before turning south into Ukraine and finally Romania. This is a relatively young mountain chain, an eastern extension of the Alps which rose around 60 million years ago and is still rising to this day. It is in Transylvania however, the forest-clad central Romanian province steeped in legend and folklore, that the Carpathians are at their widest and most majestic. This is a region famed for the supernatural, but for the naturalist such legends are but an interesting distraction from the wealth of wildlife to be found here. Fortunately, werewolves are difficult to locate these days, but Wolves and Brown Bears still roam the forests in good numbers, birds and butterflies are abundant, and the flora contains a profusion of species endemic to the region.
For centuries the people living within the elbow of the Romanian Carpathians have existed in harmony with a rich variety of birds and animals. The continuation of their ancient, low-intensity farming methods has allowed the wildlife to flourish and provides an insight into how our own landscape would have looked in days gone by. Add to this abundance of wildlife the soaring peaks of the Carpathians and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe and you have all the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday!
Our tour begins with a flight to Bucharest from where we drive for three hours out of the flat plains that surround the capital and into the cool, forest-clad mountains of the Carpathians. We will base ourselves for the week in the attractive mountain village of Magura, set within flower-filled meadows and commanding spectacular views of the surrounding forest-clad hills and jagged peaks of the Piatra Craiului National Park. From here we will head out each day to explore the beautiful mountains and valleys of Transylvania and to enjoy the birds, mammals and landscapes on a series of natural history walks.
Our exact itinerary will depend on the weather conditions and the advice of our local guide. We will, however, spend time exploring the forests, peaks and limestone gorges of the nearby Piatra Craiului National Park. This spectacular park is dominated by a jagged, 25-kilometre limestone ridge, widely regarded as one of Romania’s most beautiful sights, which reaches a height of 2,244 metres. Brown Bears, Wolf and even Lynx still roam the forests whilst, to date, 110 species of bird and 1,108 species of higher plant have been recorded, including two endemics. The lower slopes are sliced by a series of limestone gorges, such as the Zarnesti Gorge, home to Wallcreepers, Black Redstarts and wheeling flocks of Alpine Swifts. The forests are also the haunt of Black, Grey-headed and Three-toed Woodpeckers, Sombre Tit, plus the majestic, but elusive, Ural Owl. There is also much to keep the botanist and lepidopterist interested including 41 species of orchid, Carpathian Bellflower and Alpine Lady’s Mantle, plus such butterflies as Scarce Swallowtail, Clouded Apollo and Meadow Fritillary.
During the tour we will look for the tracks of larger mammals by finding and identifying their prints, spoor and the other easily missed signs of the large carnivores that still patrol these hills. We hope to find Wolf and Brown Bear tracks and learn how to tell the former from the more common dog prints. Then, as the sun lowers, we will make our way to a specially constructed hide deep in the forest to watch the animals themselves. Wolves and Lynx are rarely seen, but the Brown Bears frequently descend from the hills in the evening and, whilst nothing is certain in the world of wildlife watching, we have a good chance of seeing one or more of these magnificent creatures. Indeed, Romania still holds the largest population of Brown Bears on the continent and, whilst they are not faring so well in other regions of Europe, in the Carpathians they are flourishing!
There is so much more to enjoy in this spectacular region. Butterflies are abundant, and there are numerous other birds and plants to find that are not mentioned above. It is, however, impossible to visit Transylvania and completely ignore the folklore and stories that abound here. We will, therefore, take a short break from the wildlife to visit nearby Castle Bran, the alleged haunt of Vlad the Impaler, on whom the Dracula stories are based. Finally, for those who wish, we can arrange an excursion into the nearby medieval town of Brasov before we must sadly retrace our steps back to Bucharest to catch our flight home.

A full and varied programme in stunning countryside that met the needs and interests of a diverse and interesting group. Trips to the Black Church and the town of Braşov (I had cheese ice cream there!), the monastery and Castle Bran all added contrast. An incredible array of flowers, butterflies and insects and some reptiles too. The wallcreeper was a highlight for me as was walking through meadows full of beautiful flowers, remarkable scenery and hours spent in nature with hugely knowledgeable people. Both David and our Romanian guide did all they could to make this trip a success - and they did! David kept all the balls in the air and our Romanian guide added to our experience with his remarkable grasp on the history of his country. Shout out for our bus driver too.
J.M. West Yorkshire, May 24 -
Certainly seeing the bears was a highlight and a privilege, but an impromptu stop to view a whole flock of Bee-eaters just flying about us for 20mins or more was very enjoyable. We also had 2 sightings of a Ural Owl in the gorge below the hotel which was unexpected and spectacular. I really enjoyed just walking through the meadows looking at all the different plants. The local guide, Ionut, had very good local knowledge as well as environmental knowledge and our Naturetrek guide, David, was very well organised and knew much about the wildlife or could quickly find out about different species, whether flowers, birds or butterflies. We stayed in a lovely village in the hills with such great views of the meadows and farmsteads around as well an the towering Carpathian Mountains in the distance. Our minibus driver was safe and steady and very patient with our many stops. The picnic lunches brought to us every day no matter where we were walking was an incredible treat. I thank those ladies for making delicious homemade food for us, some of which was homegrown, and for telling us interesting life stories.
D.W. Powys, May 24 -
A short nature trip to Romania, really nicely paced, packed with a wide variety of birds, amphibians, wild flowers, butterflies and some mammals. The guide was one of the best I have experienced and the accommodation and food very good. I do do love that with Naturetrek holidays, once you’ve paid for the trip it covers almost every expense.
J.S. London, May 23 -
The situation of the guesthouse was idyllic. We were looked after wonderfully. Our leaders were extremely efficient and knowledgeable. All in all, I had a lovely time and came away with a very positive feeling about Romania, its people and its wildlife.
S.D. Oxfordshire -
This holiday was particularly rewarding. The main reasons for this were the very high quality and approachability of the tour leader and of the local guides. Simona in particular understood the needs of the group and worked very hard to make the trip a success. The excellent guest house accommodation was in a superb location. There was a high standard of catering at the guesthouse and excellent daily picnic lunches. There was also outstanding day to day organisation of visits to interesting places. The other people in the group were sociable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable on wildlife matters.
P.H.M. Leicestershire -
The leaders/wildlife experts, both Alan and Dan, were excellent - Alan with his in-depth knowledge and concern that we should all enjoy the holiday. Dan added local knowledge, in both wildlife and the history and customs of the country, which added greatly to our appreciation of the country. As a vegetarian I thought that my needs were catered for very well, both in the guesthouse and other restaurants we visited. Simona's lunchtime spreads were also very good and always waiting for us.
A.B. Gloucestershire -
This is my first ever wildlife holiday. I particularly appreciated the leadership and communication style of Alan Outen - his undoubted experience as a tour leader and his expertise as a naturalist. I found these attributes so helpful and they enabled me to gain greater insight and appreciate the various wildlife encountered. I found Alan approachable. I also appreciated his anecdotes and sense of humour, which developed a good rapport and ambience with the group. Alan's attributes enhanced the Naturetrek holiday for me.
H.C. Gloucestershire -
A truly fantastic week! It really was my type of holiday, not too much travelling each day and many leisurely hours of walking. Simona and her mum were so lovely and the lunches truly delicious, the best ever. Dan was extremely knowledgeable and informative about anything and everything, we could not have wished for a better local leader. He and Rob made a great team.
M.P. Oxfordshire -
The holiday exceeded my expectations. Transylvania felt like a very special place - gorgeous forests, lush meadows, wonderful wildlife, shepherds with their sheep, farmers still using horse and cart for transport, mobile bee hives, and of course bears! We were very fortunate to see good numbers of bears at the two hides we visited, and even saw a female bear with a cub on the cliff face opposite the hotel. The UK and local guides had excellent knowledge of the local wildlife, how it is managed and the culture of Transylvania, and were good company. The hotel was comfortable and welcoming and we were spoilt with Romanian home cooking in the evenings and fantastic picnic lunches.
F.U. Oxfordshire -
Covering the basics, the hotel was comfortable, the food local and plentiful, lunches followed us to where we were on the day. The tours were all so different covering the birds and flowers which the guides pointed out with explanations and knowledge. Wild Narcissus, plenty of orchids and the meadow flowers that we used to have in England. Butterflies streamed from the sward, Marsh Fritillaries, Woodland ringlets in profusion. We saw lesser spotted eagles and dippers and of course Storks on the chimneys. The outings to watch the bears in the forest were really interesting, 15 on the first viewing and 6 on the second. Safely tucked into a hide with the rangers for protection. I think everyone in the group enjoyed our trip and there was a friendly atmosphere which bonded the band of people all with different lines of interest and abilities. For the photographers the hotel had fabulous views of the Carpathians and a neighbouring gorge where we could spot Chamois and a bear with a baby, and the tours covered landscapes of great variety, you couldn't fail to take home really impressive pictures as souvenirs of a magnificent holiday.
O.P. Warwickshire -
A fantastic trip into the past. Mind blowing countryside unspoilt by modern farming. Real rural life among the mountains with bear, chamois and birds galore. Beautiful wild flowers at every turn with very knowledgeable guides to help us identify our finds. Good food and generous hospitality from our hosts. Incredible forests, limestone gorges and lake teeming with wildlife. Cultural visits to medieval towns and castles including the famous Bran Castle. What a wonderful week!
C.A. South Yorkshire -
Based high in the mountains, far away from any towns, we were surrounded by beautiful wild flower meadows which attracted a large variety of butterfly species. Any spare moment at the hotel was spent scanning the surrounding mountainsides for chamoix, brown bears and roe deer. There was birdlife aplenty. Every day saw us walking in the hills (sometimes rather challenging for me), and our local rep would magically appear with an appetising picnic lunch way off the beaten track. My fellow travellers made the trip all the more enjoyable, and the knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm of our tour leader and local guides was second to none. And who can forget our evening in the hide with 4 beautiful brown bears feeding so close to us .....?
D.H. London, June 18 -
A fabulous introduction to this un-spoilt corner of Europe. The flora and fauna were exceptional and the scenery dramatic - as was the weather in June! A small group who quickly gelled so that everyone participated and learnt from each other - whether experts in their area or not.
F.L. Hampshire, June 18 -
Excellent leader Andy Harding - knowledgeable and able to communicate the knowledge. Excellent with people and the group. Location of guest-house excellent - in mountains, walks from door possible before breakfast or after dinner, not in town. Lovely setting among hay meadows.
C.P. Cambridgeshire -
Enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader (Andy). Also good managing people so the group worked well. We really liked the hotel and its location with great local walks/views.
D.D. Yorkshire -
Relaxed and informative walks. Bear watching - very good. Lunch breaks, food and drinks - excellent.
D.K. Devon -
The location of the accommodation in Magura was absolutely superb. A highlight of the trip. Views, flower meadows - brilliant. For me this was a perfectly balanced holiday, not too energetic and lots to see and look at. Dan, the local guide, was excellent on everything, including local culture. A brilliant holiday, loved it!!
D.B. Somerset -
Superb leadership from Andy Harding. Excellent level of staffing - e.g. minibus driver, local guide Dan Marin and facilitator Simona.
R.M. Devon -
Our guides were very knowledgeable about all aspects of flora and fauna, which we found very helpful as we are both novices in birdwatching and wildlife spotting. We very much enjoyed the picnic lunches which were brought to us during our daily treks. The guest house was in a very quiet and scenic location which is ideal for us.
Mr & Mrs E. Essex -
Itinerary excellent giving plenty of variety and interest and knowledgeable leaders gave us plenty of information on many aspects. They were always very helpful. Wonderful to be served lunch picnic style by such cheerful people, Simone and helpers. Even offering to come a little earlier after the first day for me the diabetic.
Mr & Mrs H. Buckinghamshire -
I liked the general wildlife element- I learnt so much from others in the party on different aspects. Dan, our local guide was outstanding in his breadth of knowledge, not only on wildlife, but history too. The guesthouse was friendly + the food was excellent. Simona and her mother just amazed us with her wonderful home made dishes for the picnics too. I loved every minute!
E.S. Northumberland -
You have a great set up for this holiday/ trip. The hotel location was superb, hotel owners George & Oona couldn't do enough + Simona & her mother were amazing!

Tour Leader: David Phillips
David’s enthusiasm for nature began at an early age. During family camping holidays in the New Forest in Hampshire he would enjoy looking for newts and snakes and watching birds and deer. David has also been interested in astronomy since childhood. As a student he took astronomy courses as part of his degree and became chairman of the university's Astronomical Society. For the past 18 years he has worked in the travel industry and, during that time, he has organised and led many natural history and astronomically themed tours. He has seen ten solar eclipses across six continents and spent many nights viewing the spectacular Northern Lights from northern Iceland, one of his favourite places.
David is interested in many aspects of the natural world from studying the stars and planets above to watching birds, butterflies and mammals and down to the flora and the geology beneath his feet.
Back in the UK David carries out butterfly surveys for Butterfly Conservation and is also involved in a project spearheaded by the RSPB that involves working with local farmers to provide supplementary seed to support a population of breeding Turtle Doves. In the spring he spends many mornings in the field monitoring the birds.

There are few more pleasing sights in the natural world than a meadow filled with wildflowers. Seeing plants in their native habitat is always exciting and our flower tours offer you an incredible choice, from dazzling tropical blooms and the thrill of finding elusive orchids or delicate alpines, to seeing island endemics or British flora. Our tours range from week-long holidays focusing on the ‘Alpine flowers of the Swiss Alps’, the ‘Italian Dolomites’ and the ‘Alpine Flowers of Slovenia’s Julian Alps’, to orchid-hunting on Italy’s Gargano Peninsula and searching for the Autumn Plants of Greece’s Peloponnese. We also visit more remote areas of the world in search of plant-life, from the Tien Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan where we look for wild tulips, to the rainforests and spiny deserts of Madagascar where over 80% of the flora is endemic.
Many of us want to know more about the plants we see around us. Whether inspired by an appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of flowers, or a more focused desire to identify individual species, everyone with an interest in botany will derive pleasure from joining one of Naturetrek’s flower tours.
Why choose Naturetrek’s botanical holidays?
- All our botanical holidays are led by expert botanist guides
- All levels of interest and expertise are catered for, from hobby gardeners and complete beginners to keen botanists who wish to explore a new area with the help of a knowledgeable leader
- We keep the overall focus on flora, though expert guidance is also given on other wildlife
What can I expect on a typical Naturetrek botanical holiday?
- Travel with a group of like-minded people
- Stay at a comfortable hotel or lodge, close to an area of outstanding botanical interest
- Enjoy a series of leisurely day excursions with ample time to appreciate the local flora
In addition to our dedicated flower tours, we also offer holidays with a wider theme to encompass birds, butterflies and other aspects of natural history as well as the flora. Our spring tours to 'Crete' and ‘The Island of Cyprus’ are both timed to allow us to enjoy the botanical highlights as well as the spring bird migration, whilst ‘Croatia and Slovenia – Spring in Istria’ also allows time to enjoy a little of the local culture. ‘Romania – the Wildlife of Transylvania’ combines an appreciation of the flora of the Carpathian Mountains with birding, butterflying and a trip to look for Brown Bears from a purpose built hide, and our holidays in both the ‘French Pyrenees’ and the ‘Spanish Pyrenees’ combine birds, butterflies and botany throughout the week.

Bear Watching Holidays – See Bears in their Wild Habitat
Bears are many people’s favourite mammal. They are immensely strong and have unpredictable temperaments, yet inspire great affection in most of us.
The Naturetrek programme includes a number of specially designed bear-watching holidays which employ local expertise to provide clients with wonderful opportunities to see their favourite mammals.
Naturetrek Bear-watching tours
Most species of bear are retiring in habit and rarely seen during the day. However, a prodigious appetite leads many species to gather seasonally in big numbers, which makes them far easier to watch!
Our bear tour groups are limited in size and accompanied by Naturetrek naturalist leaders, and also usually assisted by resident experts. Although focused on bear-watching, all Naturetrek bear tours offer many opportunities to observe the other wildlife of the area.
We also see bears on other Naturetrek tours such as Sloth Bears on Indian and Sri Lankan tours, and Brown Bears on many European tours.
Where can I see bears?
- Slovenia - Bears, Birds & Caves – a 6-day holiday to Slovenia, focusing on its Brown Bears, birdlife and other natural history highlights
- Canada: The West – stay on a floating wilderness lodge and explore Vancouver Island in search of Grizzly Bears
- Spitsbergen – Realm of the Polar Bear – a voyage into the high Arctic in search of Polar Bears and other wildlife (exclusive charter cruise)
- Brown Bears in Finland – photograph bears from a hide on the Russian border
- Romania – The Wildlife of Transylvania – go in search of foraging bears in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains
Is it possible to see bears on other Naturetrek tours?
Yes. While not specifically searching for bears, we regularly have sightings of Sloth Bears on Indian and Sri Lankan tours, and Brown Bears on our Kamchatka cruise and many European tours.
