Summary
The Carpathian Mountains form a sweeping arc through Eastern Europe and they are at their widest in central Romania. The area is steeped in myths and legends but, on this tour, we will be searching out the wealth of wildlife found in this region, while supporting a project that is aiming to create the greatest area of protected land in Europe. We'll begin with a visit to a farm that is working to maximise biodiversity and is perfect habitat for birds such as Yellowhammer, Eurasian Hoopoe and Western Yellow Wagtail, along with mammals such as Wild Cat and Roe Deer. Moving into the heart of the mountains, we'll stay at two locations - a purpose-built hide overlooking a meadow where Brown Bear, Red Fox and other mammals roam and a stunning campsite set within a meadow, surrounded by forest and mountains, which are home to European Bison, martens, woodpeckers and warblers. During our stay we'll check the camera traps and areas along the streams for tracks or signs of Eurasian Lynx and Grey Wolf. We'll finish the tour with a night in a lovely chalet, with opportunities to look for White-throated Dipper in the stream and do some more bear-watching at nearby hides.
- Beautiful mountain scenery
- Watch Brown Bears from an overnight hide
- A general wildlife holiday focusing on mammals, birds, butterflies and other wildlife
- Learn about the forest ecosystem

Grading
Grade B - Easy to moderately strenuous walks. We will be on foot, on mountain trails, for the best part of each day and some of the trails can be steep (up and down hill) and rocky in places. Several miles will be covered on foot each day, although the longest walk would be in the region of 5 miles (8km), taken at a relaxed pace.
