The country is a gem full of different environments ready to be explored. The focal point of the tour were the endemic birds but there is so much more to explore that this took second priority at least in my case. The different environments and habitats that we visited illustrated well the diversity of Sri Lanka. My attention went from birds to insects, from mammals to plants as each day went by too fast. Mere words cannot describe the beauty and experience of this trip but in a few words it was truly an brilliant experience full of memories to be treasured for ever.

Summary
This birdwatching tour of tropical Sri Lanka roams from the riverine forests of Kithulgala, past the tea estates and rugged peaks of the Central Hill Country to conclude at the endemic-rich Biosphere Reserve of Sinharaja Forest. Most, if not all, of Sri Lanka's 33 endemic birds are likely to be seen during this tour, including the recently discovered Serendib Scops Owl and the brilliantly coloured Blue Magpie. In addition to these unique species, we will also see a fine selection of south Asian birds, winter visitors such as Pied Thrush and Dry Country residents in Uda Walawe Reserve where Asian Elephant and Spotted Deer offer diversions from the abundant birdlife. Despite the focus on endemics, this tour also provides a great introduction to Oriental birdwatching for newcomers to Asia.
- Superb tropical habitats
- All or most of Sri Lanka’s 33 endemic birds
- Exquisite winter visitors – including Pied Thrush & Indian Pitta
- Asian Elephant, Spotted Deer and 2 species of endemic primate
- Unique flora & colourful butterflies
- Friendly locals
- Tasty Sri Lankan cuisine
- Dramatic & beautiful scenery
- Expertly escorted by one of Naturetrek’s popular Sri Lankan ornithologists
Grading
Day walks only.It is generally recognised that there are at least 33 bird species endemic to the tropical island of Sri Lanka* and the primary objective of this short tour is to provide the maximum opportunity to see most, if not all, of these. Although the itinerary is structured to concentrate on looking for the endemics, all the areas visited are rich in birds and newcomers to the avifauna of the Indian subcontinent will find plenty of new species among the island residents. In addition, Sri Lanka is an important wintering area for many passerines from the north of the continent and Himalayan species such as Pied Thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher and Indian Pitta should feature on the tour list, along with Blyth's Reed Warbler. The variety of species will be further enhanced during a brief visit to Uda Walawe National Park where we can expect to find a tremendous selection of waterbirds, raptors and other typical Dry Zone birds plus the resident herds of Asian Elephants, Spotted Deer and Sambar. There are few more agreeable alternatives to the misery of a British winter than a visit to Sri Lanka and with so many other superb habitats to visit on the island, participants on this tour may wish to consider extending their stay and perhaps travel to the Indian Ocean coastline of the south, where the wetlands are filled with a tempting variety of waterbirds and waders. This is an intensive birdwatching tour and contains little opportunity for sightseeing. If you are interested in the wider natural history of Sri Lanka and elements of cultural sightseeing, our longer February tour may better suit your preferences. Please refer to our brochure or ask the office for further details. * Taxonomists disagree over the exact number and new D.N.A. research suggests than further species hitherto regarded as sub-species should be considered as additional endemics.

This trip was superb. Sri Lanka is a marvellous place full of wildlife and cultural history. Our guide, Saman, was very knowledgeably about both the birds and all aspects of Island life and it was his knowledge and warm good nature which turned this trip from a good one into a great one. Naturetrek is an excellent tour operator.
T.C. Northumberland -
The main guide Upali was very good at his job, his mimicry of bird calls was outstanding and his knowledge of bird life and general natural history was excellent. As we saw or heard over 200 species, including virtually all the endemics (some of which were recent splits), we did very well. Upali, the guide, was excellent. His knowledge of Sri Lankan birds was first class. I can heartily recommend this trip.
A.M. Kent -
The hotel by the lake at Embilipitiya was excellent. The day in the dry zone at Uda Walawe was brilliant. All in all another excellent holiday.
J.B. Staffordshire -
Upali proved to be an enthusiastic and hard working tour leader, particularly when he dug out a superb pair of Sri Lankan Frogmouths on our last day.
A.L. Kent -
This was my first Naturetrek tour and not my last! Excellent value for money.
W.O. Hertfordshire -
Upali (Ekanayake) was a fantastic leader, hard working and very professional. His enthusiasm is infectious and his birding skills of the highest order. Fantastic value for money, we would have no hesitation in recommending this trip to other birders.
Mr & Miss L. East Sussex -
As we saw or heard over 200 species of birds, including virtually all the endemics, we did very well. I can heartily recommend this trip.
A.M. Kent -
The overall trip was superb and our leader was excellent in every way.
E.W. Surrey -
I had a wonderful time! The people I met in Sri Lanka were so welcoming and cheerful. Their country is full of history and interest and the birds were stunningly beautiful. Our guide was great at seeking out the Sri Lankan specials such as the daytime hideaway of owls.

The majority of our wildlife tours focus primarily on birds, allowing us to offer a huge choice of bird holidays. On most of our birdwatching tours we aim to see a wide variety of species, while taking time to enjoy other wildlife as well as cultural highlights and architecture.
Naturetrek Birdwatching Tours
We have one of the largest selections of professionally organised, small group birdwatching holidays around the world and all of our birdwatching tours are accompanied by at least one professional ornithologist leader with detailed knowledge of the area.
The majority of our bird tours have a relaxed, flexible approach which allows more time for photography, detailed wildlife exploration, leisure time and the region’s people, culture, history and architecture, while allowing the group to see a wide range of bird species.
Here is a small selection of our many bird holidays:
- Southern Morocco – an exploration of the birdlife in Morocco’s southern deserts, oases and mountains
- The Camargue in Spring – a short break to enjoy the spring birds of the Rhône Delta and Camargue wetland
- Wallcreepers & Cranes in Northern Spain – a 2-centre holiday focusing on Lammergeier, Wallcreepers, raptors, Cranes, bustards, sandgrouse and more!
- Madeira & Desertas Islands – A Seabird Extravaganza! – a short break focusing on special breeding seabirds, including a night on the remote Destertas Islands
- Peru – Macaws & Machu Picchu – searches for boobies, macaws and Inca Terns
- Spain & Morocco: Birding on Two Continents! – watch the spectacular spring bird migration from both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar
Our Bargain Birdwatching Selection
Our Bargain Bird Tours are intensive birdwatching holidays suitable for the serious birder. They are led by expert English-speaking local guides (and not accompanied from the UK by a tour leader). You can expect a higher-paced tour and to spend long hours in the field.
