Thrilled to see the target butterflies (including Long-tailed Blue) and plenty more besides - moths and plants etc. Bob was a really knowledgeable leader which made the trip even more enjoyable. J.B. Norfolk

Summary
The butterflies during the late-summer season are some of our most beautiful in the UK. Brown Hairstreaks, Silver-spotted Skippers and Adonis Blues are becoming increasingly common within Sussex, and recently, colonies of Long-tailed Blues are steadily increasing their status within this corner of the country too, with adults seen on both of our 2022 and 2023 tours. In addition to the butterflies, this tour is excellent to locate the Willow Emerald Damselfly as well as witnessing the autumn bird migration.
Our hotel in Alfriston (Wingrove House for 2025) is perfectly based to explore the surrounding countryside, so expect shorter drives and longer periods of wildlife-viewing on this short break in the beautiful South Downs National Park.
- Female Brown Hairstreaks egg-laying
- Long-tailed Blues seen on our 2022 and 2023 tours!
- Silver-spotted Skippers and Chalk Hill Blues in abundance
- Adonis Blues
- Migrating Clouded Yellows and Painted Ladies
- Autumn's Lady's Tresses on chalk grasslands
- A wonderful hotel perfectly situated in the Cuckmere Valley
Grading
Grade A/B: Be prepared for no more than five-miles of walking on any day. Some walks do have steep sections in them, so correct footwear and a level of fitness is required.

Great trip. Two very good tour leaders. I saw over 15 species of butterfly - some for the first time and several species of bird I have never seen. I was able to take hundreds of photos. Naturetrek is a superb wildlife tour company. I have done several trips with them and have more booked for the future. All details of the trip are given well in advance and the staff are always able to sort out any queries or issues including refunds and changing trip due to Covid virus problems. Highly recommended company.

Tour Leader: Bob Eade
Bob has been interested in wildlife ever since he was just six years of age when he would watch the wildlife around him whilst he was fishing. When he was 12, he started photographing what he saw and some 50 years later he is still doing much the same, although fishing is a thing of the past now.
The usual break away from this was as he brought up his two sons, one of whom also got the wildlife bug and is now working full time for Naturetrek.
Bob's main wildlife interest now is in Lepidoptera, and he has had many photographs published over the years, mainly in magazines for the Wildlife Trusts and Butterfly Conservation, as well as several books.
Much of his time is spent studying the Wall Brown butterfly and he is the species champion for this species for the Sussex branch of Butterfly Conservation.
He also has a great interest in all other aspects of wildlife, particularly odonata, orchids, birds and Badgers.
