I’d never been to South Africa before nor had I been on this type of holiday. It was a pleasure to be escorted in comfortable vehicles. The accommodations were varied and all comfortable. The guides were informative and authoritative but delivered in a light hearted way. The guides were willing to change the programme to increase our chances of seeing the best flowers.

Summary
This holiday is timed to coincide (rains permitting) with the annual floral displays that carpet South Africa’s Western Cape and Namaqualand Provinces in the early austral spring. Starting in the small town of Worcester, we make our way north into the heart of Namaqualand to enjoy the region’s spring annuals and rich bulb flora. After five nights here we will head south once more, stopping at the West Coast National Park, where mammals such as Eland and Bontebok graze in a floral ‘sea’ of reds, yellows and pinks. We end our tour with two nights near Cape Town from where we explore the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the unique ‘fynbos’ vegetation of the spectacular Cape Peninsula. Although flora will be the primary focus of this tour, the region’s varied birdlife and other wildlife – including the Cape’s African Penguins and Southern Right Whales – will also be enjoyed.
- Botanise amongst the unique fynbos vegetation of the Cape Peninsula
- Spectacular floral displays in Namaqua National Park
- African Penguins & Southern Right Whales
- Abundant birdlife including Bokmakierie & the endemic Cape Sugarbird, Bontebok, Springbok & Eland in the West Coast National Park
- Led by an expert Naturetrek botanist and a local naturalist guide
- Extend your holiday with time in Cape Town
Grading
Grade A. Easy to moderate day walks only.
In September, as the UK begins its inexorable slide towards winter, 9,500 kilometres to the south the mountains, deserts and grasslands of South Africa’s Western and Northern Cape Provinces burst into life. Here, the start of the austral spring is marked by an explosion of colour, as a kaleidoscope of flowers bloom – the majority of which are endemic to the region – and carpet the land from the wave-pounded shoreline of the Cape Peninsula north to the rolling arid hills of Namaqualand. This exciting tour is timed for early September to coincide with the peak of this spectacular floral display, the intensity of which is controlled by the extent and timing of South Africa’s winter rains. Travelling north from Cape Town to Springbok we will explore a wide range of different habitats during our time here, culminating in five nights around Nieuwoudtville and the Namaqua National Park at the very heart of the region’s spring flower displays. Of course, we will not ignore the mammals, birds and other wildlife of Africa’s south-western corner and are sure to sample a few of the Cape’s excellent wines too!
Our holiday starts with a flight into Cape Town where we will be based in a comfortable hotel on the Cape Peninsula for the first three nights of the tour. An undoubted highlight of our time here will be a visit to Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden on the lower slopes of Table Mountain, world-famous for its collection of native flowers including proteas, restios, heaths and a wonderful stand of the rare Silver Tree (Leucadendron argentium). These are the dominant ingredients of the unique ‘fynbos’ vegetation, an endemic assemblage of plants and flowers that carpet the coastal regions of the Western Cape Province, including the spectacular Cape Peninsula. Armed with the knowledge of our time at Kirstenbosch, we will explore the Peninsula in search of some of the 8,500 species found within the ‘Cape Flora Kingdom’, one of only eight floral kingdoms worldwide. These should include the long tubular flowers of Erica plunkenetii, the prostate Protea acaulis and the Cape Sugarbush (Protea repens). The colourful proteas and leucospermums attract a variety of sunbirds including the Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird, both of which are endemic to the Cape region. During our time around Cape Town we will also visit the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach and watch Southern Right Whales fluking offshore in False Bay.
Next we begin our journey north, stopping en route in Langebaan for one night in order to explore the West Coast National Park, especially the Postberg section of the reserve that is only open in August and September when the flowers are at their best. This is the southern edge of the great spring flowering that carpets Namaqualand a little further to the north. The meadows and rocky hills here should be ‘painted’ in the yellows, whites, reds and purples of a wide variety of daisies and other flowers including Gazania krebsiana, Dimorphotheca pluvialis (Cape Rain Daisy) and Ursinia anthemoides (Solar Fire). Amongst this sea of colour stride Bontebok, Eland, Cape Mountain Zebra and Ostrich, whilst overhead fly Black Harrier.
Moving on, we will spend our next five nights in the very heart of the flower displays, split between two nights near the small town of Nieuwoudtville and three nights in Kamieskroon, just to the south of the Namaqua National Park. If the winter rains have been kind, the kaleidoscope of colour here can be breathtaking! Our time in the Namaqua National Park is sure to be another highlight of the tour. The reserve, which covers over 700 square kilometres, is home to an estimated 3,500 species of plant, of which up to 1,000 may be endemic to Namaqualand! It also holds the world’s greatest diversity of succulent plants and is the only declared desert ‘Biodiversity Hotspot’ on Earth! The ‘Renosterveld’ surrounding Nieuwoudtville is equally fascinating botanically and has a particularly rich bulb flora, including both Sparaxis elegans and the rare Sparaxis tricolor. A day trip north to Springbok will take us to our most northerly point on the tour and offers the chance to enjoy the flowers, birds and mammals of the nearby Goegap Nature Reserve. As we appreciate the colourful flora we will not ignore the local fauna and should see such mammals as Gemsbok, Springbok and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, as well as birds including Southern Black Korhaan, Verreaux’s Eagle and the beautiful Bokmakierie shrike.
Finally, we head south once more back towards Cape Town, stopping for two nights en route in Clanwilliam. Here we will explore the varied habitats along the Olifants River and in the Cedarberg Mountains, before returning to Cape Town for our overnight flight home.

A two week tour from the Cape to Namaqua to see the floral carpet, birdwatch and see other wildlife. In spite of the lack of rain the flowers were still quite breathtaking. Our brilliant guides... and our Naturetrek botanist David showed us something new and interesting every day. In the evenings they were good company and introduced us to South African cuisine... in the daytime...lots of cake. A great "spot" of a band of meerkats seeing off intruders was one of the late highlights of the tour for me....and the fabulous proteas! I have travelled with Naturetrek for some years and have already booked two holidays with them for 2020. They provide excellent guides, good accommodation and holidays you can have confidence that you will enjoy.

David was good as ever, brimming with enthusiasm! The two local guides were excellent, Gavin Sims with all the birding info (as a birding beginner myself) and Bert Palthe was brilliant, knowledgeable, kind, and right on top of all the organisation, accommodation, meals, keeping us all on time so we could see everything on the itinerary....and the stars! Loved the flowers. Got some great bird photos too. Lucky to see the meerkats...great spotting by Bert. Some lovely memories...Thanks

The 3 tour guides worked well together. It was good to have a specialist botanist & bird expert on the tour. Great local knowledge of local guides of geograpghy, geology, history, birds, mammals, insects & other wildlife - all of these are interconnected & guides gave interesting insights into all of them. Good variety of habitats visited leading to seeing many different species.

There are few more pleasing sights in the natural world than a meadow filled with wildflowers. Seeing plants in their native habitat is always exciting and our flower tours offer you an incredible choice, from dazzling tropical blooms and the thrill of finding elusive orchids or delicate alpines, to seeing island endemics or British flora. Our tours range from week-long holidays focusing on the ‘Alpine flowers of the Swiss Alps’, the ‘Italian Dolomites’ and the ‘Alpine Flowers of Slovenia’s Julian Alps’, to orchid-hunting on Italy’s Gargano Peninsula and searching for the Autumn Plants of Greece’s Peloponnese. We also visit more remote areas of the world in search of plant-life, from the Tien Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan where we look for wild tulips, to the rainforests and spiny deserts of Madagascar where over 80% of the flora is endemic.
Many of us want to know more about the plants we see around us. Whether inspired by an appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of flowers, or a more focused desire to identify individual species, everyone with an interest in botany will derive pleasure from joining one of Naturetrek’s flower tours.

In addition to our dedicated flower tours, we also offer holidays with a wider theme to encompass birds, butterflies and other aspects of natural history as well as the flora. Our spring tours to 'Crete' and ‘The Island of Cyprus’ are both timed to allow us to enjoy the botanical highlights as well as the spring bird migration, whilst ‘Croatia and Slovenia – Spring in Istria’ also allows time to enjoy a little of the local culture. ‘Romania – the Wildlife of Transylvania’ combines an appreciation of the flora of the Carpathian Mountains with birding, butterflying and a trip to look for Brown Bears from a purpose built hide, and our holidays in both the ‘French Pyrenees’ and the ‘Spanish Pyrenees’ combine birds, butterflies and botany throughout the week.
